Virginia McGarvey Obituary
1931 - 2022
Virginia McGarvey, native Houstonian, died July 30, 2022. She graduated from Lamar High School, Houston, and attended the University of Houston Central campus, as well as Mason Road U of H. Virginia is survived by her husband, John McGarvey; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Terry Lovett; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Betty Hinkle; step-grandson Trey Dromgoule; grandsons John Allen (Jay) Hinkle and Brayden Reilly Hinkle; brother, Richard Leach; three nieces, Debbie Swindell, Ann Rabalais, and Becky Schulte; three nephews, Keith Leach, James P. Leach, and The Rev. John P. Leach. She was predeceased by her brother, The Rev. Philip M.P. Leach and his wife, Patricia Bosley Leach, and by parents Peter and Ethel leach, and twin brother David I. Leach.
Virginia was very active in her church since teen-age years when she attended youth camps at the old Camp Allen in Baytown. Amongst many other youth activities, she taught Vacation Bible School along with other Diocese of Texas teenagers, in small parishes that did not have the personnel to have VBS without help from the Diocese in the form of well-trained teenagers. It was a wonderful experience and resulted in many lifelong friendships. As an adult, Virginia was very actively involved in Holy Spirit Episcopal Church women's groups and as an office in the Hoe & Hope Garden Club. She was also involved in many civic affairs, but mostly with her Homeowners Association, chairing several committees, and served one year as president.
A Memorial Service celebrating Virginia's life will be held Friday, August 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, 12535 Perthshire Rd, Houston, TX 77024. A reception will follow the memorial service on the church campus. Virginia will be laid to rest at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Holy Spirit Endowment Fund. Visit www.DettlingFuneral.com to leave words of condolence for the family.
