WALTER K. LONG, MD7/6/1929 ~ 10/7/2010Born in McAllen, TexasDr. Long is preceded in passing by father Walter K. Long, Sr.; mother Elizabeth Black Williams; and stepmother Lila Thornhill Long.Dr. Long is survived by Beverly, beloved wife of 53 years; as well as his children Valerie, David, and Stephen; and grandchildren Brian, Alex, Allison, and Kylie. Walter is also survived by several cousins residing in Houston and Dallas, Texas; and Jackson and Columbus, Mississippi as well as several nieces and nephews in Syracuse, NY.Education included undergraduate studies at the University of Mississippi, medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, internships at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, University of Texas in Galveston, Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, and Washington University in St. Louis. He went on to study post graduate at Lahey Clinic in Boston. He completed a five year surgical residency at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY, followed by a fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.Walter served in the Public Health Service in North and South Dakota. He was also a flight surgeon with the Air National Guard in Cheyenne, Wyoming and earned the rank of major.Dr. Long had surgical practices in Cheyenne, Wyoming; Concord, California; as well as many different hospitals throughout the Houston area. He was committed to using his medical practice to help others until retirement at age 74.Through the years, Walter enjoyed traveling, gardening, snow skiing, hiking, and even hunting and rock climbing. He tenaciously studied the Bible as well as any book on history or geography.Walter will be best remembered for his deep commitment to God and church; a never ending thirst for knowledge, a lasting contribution to medicine, and a selfless dedication to his wife and children.A memorial service will be held in Dr. Long's honor on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2:30 PM at Holy Comforter Lutheran Church located at 1901 Woodland Hills Dr. Kingwood, Texas 77339.The family requests that in lieu of flowers; please consider a donation to Holy Comforter Lutheran Church in Dr. Long's memory.
