Weldon Bailey "Jim" Kethan

Weldon Kethan Obituary

WELDON BAILEY "JIM" KETHAN of Deer Park, Texas and his wife BETTY MARION KETHAN died Wednesday, September 24, 2008 and Monday September 29, 2008, respectively. Just as they went through 62 and 1/2 years of life, we are certain Jim and Betty entered eternity hand in hand. Jim was born July 4, 1920 in Thrall, Texas to Edward and Wylie Susannah Kethan. Betty was born December 15, 1921 to Hyrle and Bertha Humphries in Gaffney, South Carolina. While attending college at Sam Houston State University, Jim volunteered for service in the United States Marine Corp. in 1942. After completing Officer's Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, Jim served with distinction in the Pacific Theater as a 2nd Lt. In the 6th Division of the Corp. until the end of World War II. Wounded at Okinawa, he was sent to the hospital at Camp Wallace where he met the love of his life, Betty, who had decided early on to serve her country by becoming an ensign navy nurse. After a whirlwind romance, the two married, and after Jim completed his college degree, they moved to Deer Park, Texas. Once there, Jim began coaching high school athletics while Betty devoted her life to Jim and raising their five children as well as to the service of her community as a private duty nurse. She was happiest giving to others through her culinary skills, her imaginative games she created for her grandchildren, or just generally making life better for all those around her. Jim was happiest at Betty's side with their family, in his garden or woodworking shop, and as a coach on the football and baseball fields. As a coach, Jim led many teams to regional and state championships in both football and baseball. In 1967 Jim became Athletic Director for the Deer Park Independent School District. In 1990 Jim was inducted into the Texas Athletic Directors Hall of Honor. Jim and Betty are survived by their five children: Betsy Reed and husband Cecil of Marietta, Georgia; James Donald "Jimbo" Kethan and wife Wendy of Woodville, Texas; Joe Kethan and wife Toni of San Antonio, Texas; Dena Oden and husband Carl of The Woodlands, Texas and Elizabeth Gilliam-Wright and husband Scott of Arlington, Texas, as well as 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday at Deer Park United Methodist Church, 1300 E. 13th Street, Deer Park. Interment Grandview Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Thursday. Deer Park Funeral Directors, 336 E. San Augustine, Deer Park, 281-476-4693.

I was saddened to hear of Aunt Betty and Uncle Jim's passing. I remember the many summers we spent when you came to Granny and Granddaddy's. Your mother was a strong influence in my choice of careers! They will not be forgotten. You are in our prayers.

Thank you all so much for your heartfelt words, prayers, and sweet memories of my wonderful grandparents. I loved them more than you can imagine, and while I am incrediblly devastated to lose them from this world, I am truly happy that they walked "hand in hand" into eternity. My love goes to all my family and all those who were touched by my dear Mimmy and Gran.

I just want to tell you how sorry we are to hear of your loss. They were wonderful people and it is amazing how long they had been together. Their parting so close together just shows you the love they had for each other. I am sorry that no one from our side of the family came to the funeral but I did not know about their passing until this evening. I received an e-mail from Aunt Helen, Morris's wife. She received the e-mail from Morris & Christi Kethan. I will be praying for your entire family. God bless you all.

From Curtis Kethan's entire clan! Curtis is now the oldest of the Kethan's.

My heart aches more than I could have imagined. Losing my dad 6 months ago was extremely difficult and now I've lost my "other parents". I thank God for everything they did for my girls and I. I love them with all my heart.
I miss you Mu and Gran.

To the children of Jim and Betty Kethan, My family lived on 5th street in Deer Park and we considered all of you good neighbors. Your mom and dad were so extra special in my book. My mother and dad, Joe and Polly Rhame were very fond of the Kethan family. My parents live with me now in Highland Village Texas; dad will be 90 this month and mom just celebrated her 85th. They asked me to express their sympathies to you all. They hope to enter the pearly gates together, just as your mom and dad did.

I first met Jim when he interviewed me for a job with the Deer Park School District. I was 16 years old and it was my first job....working at one of the school swimming pools during the summer. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I met Betty later when Jim brought her in to the salon I work at. I grew to love both of them. My son is a Marine and Jim always asked about him and then shared a few stories of his own time spent in the Corps. I will miss them both dearly...and Jim's homemade Jelly!

To the children of Coach and Mrs Kethan, I am so very sorry for you loss. I went to school in Deer Park all 12 years as did my brothers, Duwayne, Royce and sister Johnnie and he was always respected in our household. Every time I would see Coach Kethan we would always have the same conversation, he would say, "I've coached lots of boys and seen lots of football games but I've never seen a football player as good as Duwayne Kerbow was." He probably told lots of families the same thing, but it would make me beam with pride. He took such pride in always having our football fields looking the best! My Dad and our entire family thought he was the greatest, and so very proud to have known him
Sincerely,
Barbara Kerbow Craft

To the Kethan family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. You don't know me, but your parents lived next door to us in Huntsville. Oh, what fond memories I have of your parents. My father, Joe Snodgrass, taught Jim when he attended SHSU. Later when I was in high school, Jim taught me. Jim was one of my favorites teachers.

I did not know these people but I will pray for your family. They were an example of real love through the years. I was just viewing the paper and They caught my attention. I can't imagine loosing 2 love one at the same time.

To the family of Jim Kethan and his wife Betty. Mr. Keathen was a coach and teacher when I was in high school and he was one of my favorite people. Always a smile and a kind word. He always knew who I was when he saw me. That was amazing to me, that he could remember me after having so many students. I am sure that he and Betty are togehter and happy. God bless you and you are in my prayers

Coach and Mrs. Kethan were good friends of my grandparents, who lived one street over from them. I only knew them briefly, but I will never forget their hospitality and kindness.

Coach Kethan was on the coaching staff when the Deer Park High School varsity football team won the state championship in 1954 and 1955. But Mrs. Kethan was quick to point out to me that, as supervisor of athletics, he also worked hard to provide equal opportunities to girls’ athletics. What a great legacy!

For someone reading this message who’d like to get to know the man a little better, I offer Coach Kethan’s own words regarding his approach to athletics:

"It has always been my intention to treat all students alike, to be fair and impartial, and, at the same time, give each player individual attention. I have never felt that the sacrifice of any one student is worth the price of winning. The yard stick for measuring the success or failure of the athletic program cannot be confined to the win and loss column.”

My heart goes out to the Kethan family during this difficult time. May God bless you all.

I played on one of Coach Kethan's regional championship baseball teams. That was as far as the baseball playoffs went in 1960. Jim was a great guy and a fine coach and had a profound influence on my life.

I just lost my father last month, so I have great empathy for your loss. Jim and Betsy had a wonderful life together and I am just happy to have known them.
