Jacob Andrew Obituary

Four year old Jacob Dylan Andrew of Manitowoc passed away on March 11, 2012 at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee in the arms of his parents Joel and Jennifer Andrew. The time of death was 3:13 A.M. March 13th was to be his fifth birthday.

His closest relatives are his parents, his little brother Jackson, both sets of Grandparents John and Sandra Andrew, and Phil and Lynn Jacobs, his Uncle Nick Andrew, Uncle Ben Jacobs and Tita Leica Jacobs, his Great Uncle Erv Baumgart, and family pets Jakers, Harley, Max and Birdie.

Jacob had over a two year battle with Neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer that only around 650 children in America get every year. After 15 rounds of chemo, 26 rounds of radiation, two MIBG therapies, multiple surgeries, countless biopsies, tens of thousands of miles of travel, bone marrow transplant, and antibody therapy, he definitely fought the good fight, but in the end it was his disease that overtook his liver and within a week he was gone.

His last forty-eight hours were filled with more pain than we can describe, but after his Mother asked him to give us a sign that he was alright in heaven and not in pain anymore, when he took his last breath and the oxygen mask was removed, he had a tiny smile and the most peaceful look on his face. This was our sign.

He loved going to the hospital and would always try to do what he was told. He was loved by many of his nurses and doctors. He had the brightest, most warming smile you could imagine that would bring instant joy to anyone who saw it. He brought so much happiness to us over his short life.

The things he loved most were playing Nintendo Wii, Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Monkey Ball, Kirby, Rayman, Wii fishing, Resort and many, many more. He also loved Elmo, bowling, throwing stones in any kind of body of water, boating, fishing, movies, Tom & Jerry, nick jr., kickball, hopscotch, the zoo, golf, baseball, basketball, pool, riding on roller coasters, steak, salad, kitty cocktails, airplanes, and of course fighting fires. Above everything, the things that he loved most were his monkey blanket and matching monkey pillow that went everywhere with him.

Jacob was a determined little boy and he wasn't going to let anything get in his way of living a life. He was going to do the things he wanted to do that made him happy. The greatest inspiration he gave people was to live every day to it's fullest, no matter what the circumstances. "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain."

Special thanks to the Casey Herrmann Foundation, The Kountry Kids Foundation, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Hobart Fire Department, The Valders Cross Country Team, ENT Clinic in Green Bay, Schad Family, all of our friends and family that have followed our journey, and especially to the teams of doctors & nurses in the H.O.T. Unit at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, & The Helen De Vos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. A special, special thanks to Stacey Felton and Marcy Firl for making his two most treasured possessions.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 18th at the Jens Family Funeral Home, 1122 South 8th Street, Manitowoc. Rabbi Sidney Vineburg and Rev. Dan Felton will officiate. Visitation will be from 12pm to 3pm. Following the service there will be a procession over to The Club for a reception & gathering to celebrate Jacob's life. There will be a balloon release and uplifting prayer. We welcome you all to come and we look forward to sharing memories with everyone.

Burial will take place on Monday, March 19th at Evergreen Cemetery. This will be for close friends and family only. Please meet us at 9:50am by the eternal flame so we can enter the cemetery together.

I learned of Jacob's story through a co-worker. I cried as I read his Caringbridge journal entries. However, as I looked at the pictures of this amazing little boy I could tell how strong he was. He was only four but his eyes showed the wisdom of a grown man. Jacob's eyes carried so much life in them and I feel lucky that I was able to hear his story. This little boy makes me appreciate the beautifully simple things in life. Thank you Jacob. Your life will be celebrated in every flower that blooms this spring. Love to Jacob's family and friends. Stay strong and know that your little boy's stength and positivity has touched more people than you could ever imagine :)

Dear Joel and Jennifer, my deepest condolences to you and your family. There is nothing in life worse than losing a child, as you know, I lost my son almost 5 years ago now and it's still very painful. If you ever need to talk, just give me a call. We missed you Joel in Chicago and were feeling your pain.
Your friend always, Joan Eberhardt (Whitford)
