In recent years, he was a faithful member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Francis Creek. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, dartball, and volunteering his time, and was well known by his family and friends as "Mr. Fix-it". Les also enjoyed Big Band music and dancing.

Dearest Members of The Shimek and Klemen Extended Families...I knew Les for many years and all I can say he finally got to take "That Sentimental Journey" to the Lord. I was out of town trying to get a deer or I certainly would have been to his funeral service. On behalf of RollingThunderWi3.org hats off and Salute to one of the Finest Tin Can Sailors America has known...Bill Gamble, Manitowoc and long time member of St. Andrew's (St. Francis of Assisi Parish)

Dear Cheryl, Susie and Julie,
Sorry to hear about your loss. I still remember your father and mother and the get-togethers for Packer games, graduation parties, etc. Good times and great memories growing up on Manitou Street. Your father will be missed but I'm sure the gang is back together in a better place!

Dear Cheryl, Suzie, Julie and Family,
We would like to extend our sympathy to all of you for a man that we feel so fortunate to have had in our lives. It was only ten short years, but it seems so much longer. The loss we feel is great so we can only imagine the loss you are feeling. He brought great joy to our mother, Ann, and to all of our family including our children who thought of him as a "grandpa". His zest for life was amazing and he certainly lived life to its fullest. He was very proud of his family and expressed it often. We will miss him dearly at all our gatherings and dinner tables, but we are pretty sure that he will look down upon us from heaven to keep a watchful eye on us. Our sincerest prayers and sympathies to all of you.

Dear Cheryl, Suzy, Julie, and families,

It's a sad day on Manitou Street today. The Ruzek family have shed tears but also remembered fondly all the happy times we had living next to your family for so many years. When we heard that robust laugh at our backdoor we knew it was Les bearing gifts and waiting to tell stories or a few good jokes. He always shared goodies from the garden or great sweet treats your Mom would send over with him. There were also the times when Les and Les enjoyed sharing a project over the week end. We won't mention the occasional expletives when things didn't go perfectly. Sometimes we all just visited on the patio laughing and imparting great wisdom.

We continued to share graduations and weddings as each of us left the nest and sadly the death of your Mom. Then there were no more Shimek's on Manitou Street and life goes on.

After Les moved away, he continued to bring joy to our parents still bearing gifts and jokes to raise their spirits. He also enjoyed razzing our Dad about golf and his hole in one.

Most of all he was especially proud of all his girls and their accomplishments. His grandchildren brought a special sparkle to his eyes. It was great to hear what you were all doing, after you moved away.

A very special man is now in the arms of the Lord, smiling down on all of us today but we will still remember the laughter, joy and compassion that were Mr. Shim! Until we meet again.

With our sincere condolences and prayers,
Lester, Betty, Sandra, Bonny, Steve and Becky

Cheryl, Sue, Julie, and family: We are very sorry for your loss and extend our sympathy to Les' entire family. We, as well, will miss his smile every time we saw him. He had an enormous desire for life and enjoyed every day. He "always" looked forward to something to do, something to volunteer for and to be present at every occasion/event in his famiy or with Ann's family. He wore many hats in his lifetime; husband, father, grandfather, uncle, "special friend", Mr. Fix It, Tin Can Sailor and Shim. Jon and I enjoyed our many get togethers with him and his ideas on how to do a project or fix something.

His presence in our life will remain forevermore. I know he is looking down from heaven at all of us and is saying, "Don't worry, for my journey is not over, it has just begun." He will be missed, but never forgotten.

The Family of Ann Kleman written by: Rachel Jeanquart

November 21, 2011

When Les entered our family who would have known the joys he'd bring. Sundays filled with drives in the country, dancing at Slovan, and dinners with Ann's families. Les, would go anywhere and everywhere his van would take him....oh how he LOVED his vans!!
Mr. Fix-it, he thought he was. Hours and hours he spent in the barn at Ann's, in "his workshop". Even at 88 no project was too big for him to dream of taking on!! Thanks to all his ambition the barns are all straightened....and he was affectionately named "Come along".
Fond are the memories we all have of him. His love for his family and ours was endless. His generosity-overwhelming...easily evidenced by the many shared conversations, old fashionds, and Friday night fish fry's at the Eagles.
Les touched us all in many ways. For every ounce of love he got, he gave back ten fold. His little buddies, "my boys" as he would call them (Nolan, Jarett. And Brenden) always loved to see him. And he would beam when he saw them.
Les was an AWESOME man. As we begin to say our good-byes, let us all remember the good times. He'd want it that way!!! Les, is now in Heaven. In a place of beauty, where there is no pain. A place where all is well. And he got there by traveling the roads of life's SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY.......his favorite song!!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I will never forget your Mom and Dad. They were two of the sweetest people I had the privilege of knowing and calling my friend. Every week when your Dad brought Mom to the beauty shop he'd have to come in and tell a little joke or tease us. Always with a smile. What a beautiful out look he had. Always willing to give a helping hand. We had the good fortune of enjoying some of his harvest every year, what a treat. Oh, how he loved to talk about those Grandsons. He was so proud them. I think i met them once but felt like I knew them. He was so proud of his family! You were bless to have a Dad-Grandpa like him. God Bless you and may all the happy memories help you through this terrible time and years ahead. Les You were a great man. Now you and Charlotte Can once again dance!!!
Our Thoughts and Prayers are with you.
