Agnes June Thompson, 96, fell asleep and passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord, on Monday, May 29, 2017. June was the second youngest of ten children born to John B. and Alice White, in Clare, Michigan, on April 9, 1921.
As a young girl on her family's farm, Aunt June preferred to work in the garden and fields with her father and brothers, rather than in the kitchen with her mother and sisters. She learned how to plant and tend the garden and never met a seed she couldn't sprout. The love of gardening and appreciation for home grown vegetables stayed with her all her life. In March of this year, while most of us were still shoveling snow, Aunt June was sowing seeds for this summer's bounty.
She loved her brothers and sisters, and was especially close to Bob and Katie. She told us stories about riding an old family horse to school with Katie and Bob, and skiing over snow covered fences on the farm some Michigan winters. She grew up loving animals and told us about Aunt Biddy, the old hen her "Ma" would let follow her through the house as a small child. She grew up playing pinochle with her family, and those of us who remain have many memories of aunts and uncles laughing and playing cards into the wee hours of the night.
June married Walt Thompson in 1944. They had two beautiful daughters, Pam and Lynn. Some years later, she joined her sister Katie and brother Bill in California, and raised her daughters as a single mother. During that time she worked at Motor Rim and Wheel, and The Bell Telephone Company. She remained in California until the 1970's when she came to Idaho to help her brother Bob, and attend Boise State to become a nurse. She was in her 50's at that time. She achieved that goal and worked as a nurse until she retired in her mid 60's.
Aunt June was raised in a devout Catholic home. Her family prayed the rosary everyday during the summer at the noon meal. Her faith in Christ remained the cornerstone of her life, and you could not know her without knowing she loved God. Aunt June loved God with her words and with her actions. When she had to give up driving, she returned to gardening with a vengeance, and that opened years of sharing vegetables as a way of sharing God's love. She remembered others in need, and with the help of family and friends she shared the food she grew with those around her. Aunt June liked to do her own shopping, and always included items for the St. Paul's food bank. She donated to favorite charities all her life, including Boys Town and the St. Jude's Foundation, as well as numerous others.
Aunt June loved her family and friends, and shared her time and resources generously. A month before she passed she attended the wedding of a nephew, and got a chance to share gardening tips, and reminisce with family from Michigan she had not seen in years. As Aunt June grew older and her body grew weaker, her prayer life grew stronger. When she could not work as long in the garden, she prayed for her family and friends. She prayed often and every day. She prayed for people she didn't know, and she encouraged others in their faith. She attended church regularly, as she had all her life, until the last month when she could not rise any longer. She outlived all her brothers and sisters, and her children. She missed family that had gone on ,and she looked forward to seeing them again in heaven, but most of all...she wanted to see Jesus. She wanted to meet God the Father and the Holy Spirit. She spoke that often, in a heartfelt manner, and she asked God to come for her, she was ready to go home. "Happy Day" and love, until we see you again.
June Thompson is survived by her grandsons, Kief, Ian and Aaron, and many nieces and nephews. She formed special relationships with many loving people. The family would like to thank Liam Stokes, Maureen Stokes, John Niland, Mary Carol Niland, Cindy and Jim Mount, Father Jerry, Arturo and Veronica Morales, Chris Davis and her son, neighbors Floyd and Leann, and Megan - and the many others of St. Paul's parish who loved Aunt June and helped her remain independent in her home these many years. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Good Samaritan Village who cared for her the last weeks of her life on this side.
The recitation of the Rosary will begin at 5:30 PM on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Alsip and Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Avenue South, Nampa, Idaho with the viewing continuing until 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 5, 2017 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Nampa at 10:00 AM. Interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
