Elvira Langley Obituary
Elvira "Ella" Langley
Dec. 31, 1906 - July 24, 2008
Elvira "Ella" Langley, 101, passed away in her sleep on the morning of July 24, 2008, at a local nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Zeyer Funeral Home, 467-7300.
The youngest of eight children, Ella was born on Dec. 31, 1906, in a log cabin in Hog Hollow, near the city of Ammon, Idaho. Her parents, James and Elizabeth Humphries, raised their children in a home where there was never a raised voice, never a cuss word allowed.
A brother and sister were lost to pneumonia. The family homesteaded in Woodville until Ella's father caught typhoid fever and they lost the farm.
Ella was planting, weeding, picking spuds and topping beets, beginning at a very young age. Times were hard. She attended school in Shelley and went until the weather got too severe, as she had to walk over a mile to catch the bus at 7 a.m. Back then they had very long, cold winters and lots of snow. After she graduated from the eighth grade, she worked for Roger Brothers Seed Co. and not long after that she took a job as a telephone operator in Idaho Falls.
Ella met Everett "Ed" Orman Langley and they married in 1924. They moved around for some time before settling in Nampa in 1947. Ed worked for the UPRR. During their marriage, they had four daughters.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ella had many callings and fulfilled them all with faith and pride. She worked in the women's Relief Society as work director, and was a Primary and Sunday School teacher. She also felt honored to serve a mission for two years.
Ella kept herself busy with crafts and needlework. She loved her flowers and garden and was told she had a "green thumb." She was also involved in genealogy and had traced her lineage back to the 1500s.
Her love of family was unconditional, and she was always willing to make sacrifices for them. She was loved by her family, and she will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
Ella is survived by three of her daughters, Phyllis Thornton of Nampa, Maxcine (Glen) Ernest of O'Fallon, Mo., and Kay (John) Wallace of Nampa. Ella has 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ed; a daughter, Betty Joy Cornell of Springfield, Ore.; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter. She was the last of her siblings.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made out to: Primary Children's Medical Central Foundation, 100 N. Medical Drive, P.O. Box 58249, Salt Lake City UT 84158-0249.
