Gloria Fastabend Obituary

Gloria Jean Fastabend
Gloria Jean Fastabend, 56, of Caldwell passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at her home. The daughter of Faith Fastabend and the late Arthur Fastabend, Gloria was born June 7, 1951, in San Diego, Calif., where her father was stationed with the U.S. Navy. She relocated to Idaho as an infant, and was educated in Nampa schools. She graduated in 1968 from Nampa High School, where she was active in drill team, debate and journalism. She was a delegate to American Legion's Girl's State. She earned a BA and an MA in history at Boise State University, where she was active in student affairs and was elected to the student body Senate.
Gloria began her teaching career in social studies at South Jr. High School in Nampa. She was involved in sports activities with her church as she was growing up, and coached basketball, cross-country and ski teams at SJHS. Later she taught government at Nampa High School, and regularly took delegations of her seniors to the "Close Up" program at Washington, D.C. She also coached the ski team and was involved with the student "Natural Helpers" organization.
She earned a second Master's Degree in school and community counseling at Albertson College of Idaho in July, 1987, and afterward became a school counselor at South Jr. High. She recently retired as counselor at East Valley Middle School after 32 years of service with the Nampa School District. She was honored by Boise State University as "Counseling Intern Supervisor of the Year."
She and her long-time best friend Jeri Gowen established "Harbor Lights Counseling," a private family mental health counseling practice in Caldwell. This endeavor was dear to their hearts, as they were able to work with their colleagues in assisting a great number of people. Another joint venture was the purchase of a vacation cabin at McCall in 1986, and a home on Lake Lowell in Caldwell. Gloria had acquired expertise in electrical wiring while finishing her first home in Nampa, and completed the wiring in both the newer houses as they were remodeled.
Gloria was an ardent blood donor, and contributed 115 pints before being sidelined by her cancer diagnosis. After that she tried to recruit new donors to fill in for her! She and Jeri were active with the Red Cross, and served behind the scenes as mental health team leaders in New York City after "9-11", and in Denver, Colo., during the wildfire season in 2002. Gloria was given the "Champion of the Human Spirit" award by Senator Mike Crapo.
Throughout her teen years, Gloria worked during summers for her Uncle Carl at Hoffman's Greenhouse and Nursery. Always a lover of sports and the outdoors, she especially enjoyed fishing on the annual family camping trips to the mountains. During recent years, she shared elaborate trips and adventures with good friends, pursuing her love of sports such as skiing, snow-shoeing, biking, tennis, golf, backpacking, kayaking and sailing, "4-wheeling" and snowmobiling. She especially enjoyed a deep-sea fishing expedition to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, where she caught salmon, halibut, and cod. She also loved fly fishing and her most recent expedition after retirement was on a lake with her new "float-tube," a retirement gift. She was an avid puzzle-solver, and her hobbies included rock collecting, woodworking, and travel. She was a kind, compassionate, generous person.
Gloria is survived by her mother, Faith; her brother, Gerald Fastabend (Deleice) of Boise; several nephews, nieces and cousins; her dearest best friend Jerilyn Gowen and family; and numerous cherished friends and neighbors.
Gloria wanted to especially thank Dr. Brenda Davies, OBGYN Associates of Caldwell; Dr. Joanna Cain of Oregon Health Sciences University Center for Women's Health of Portland; St. Alphonsus Cancer Treatment Center personnel Dr. Carolyn Collins, Dr. Stephanie Hodson, Dr. Timothy Sawyer, and many other cancer care staff and nurses, for 7 years of superb care and support.
A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell. A Memorial Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Vallivue Middle School, at the corner of 10th Avenue and Highway 55, Caldwell.
Memorials may be a gift to the cancer care center of your choice, or a commitment to donate blood to the Red Cross in Gloria's name. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Ave. S. Nampa, ID 83651, 466-3545.

Of all the teachers at South Jr. High some 20+ years ago, hers is the only name I can still recall. My time at the school was relatively short, but her personality and teachings stuck with me. To this day, I still give her credit for laying the groundwork for my understanding of government and for encouraging her students to stand up for what they thought was right.

Faith & Jeri & Family:
I have such fond memories of being your neighbor growing up. I remember when I was a little girl, watching both Gloria and Jeri as teenagers and thinking how "cool" they both were, and wanting to be like them. Then when I was a teenager I got the privilege of being in Miss Fastabend's (although she was still Gloria to me) social studies class at South Jr. High and she was a great teacher, who really made us as students think for our selves defend our points of view. I am reaaly sorry to hear of her passing, and the health challenges she faced at the end of her life. My thoughts and prayers are with both of you during this difficult time, and I want you to know how much I and my family valued your friendship during those years on Almond street.

I am saddened by the loss of such a compassionate and kind person. I was fortunate enough to have taken her class at Nampa High School. I am grateful to have been touched by her strong character and giving personality. May the hearts of her friends and family be at peace.

Ms. Fastabend was a teacher of mine in high school almost 20 years ago. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was never far from my thoughts and that was obvious when my now adopted daughter was having troubles with her biological mom. I contacted her and through her advice we found a wonderful councelor for my daughter at her center. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May God Bless you all!

Gloria (Miss Fastabend) was an inspiration to me when I was a student many years ago at South Junior High in Nampa. Gloria cared about her students and was passionate about teaching. I will always remember Miss Fastabend for her caring spirit and insight's she often shared with the class.

Ms. Fastabend was a wonderful teacher. I was priviledged to have her as a social studies teacher in the 9th grade and as a government teacher in the 12th grade at Nampa High School. I still tell people about the mock political campaign we participated in during our 9th grade social studies class and how she helped to patch up an adolescent rift between me and a friend in high school. She was dedicated to her students and will be greatly missed.

I first met Gloria back in the late 70's at South Jr. High. I was never fortunate enough to have her as a teacher but later in life I was priveleged to have her as a friend. She touched my life with her strength and leadership. She was an amazing person and I'm proud of her for staying true to her beliefs even in difficult times. Unfortunately, I have regrets for which I hope to seek her forgiveness in the next life. Until then . . . May Jeri and the families find comfort and strength to get through this difficult time.

I was fortunate to have been under Ms. Fastabend's wing at both South Junior High and Nampa High. Some of my most fond memories are of the student activities she was dedicated to outside of class including student government, ski club, close-up and natural helpers. I'm incredibly thankful to have had her help me learn and grow. My sympathies to her family and friends.

Although my time with Gloria was short, I feel fortunate to encounter a person like her in my life. She was my supervisor for one semester while I was running a group once a week. Gloria was always there for me and my friend, new counselors. She'd never showed how much uncomfort and pain she might have been going through. She was truly a "professional." I greatly admire her professionalism and genuineness. Thank you, Gloria.

Dear Faith:
I was so sorry to hear of Gloria's passing. I have the fondest memories of her giving me rides to school and seminary when we were in high school. Her "Ole Blue" served us well. She was always so kind to me. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Warmest sympathy to Ms. Fastabend's loved ones. Her sense of adventure and her energy in sharing it were inspirational to me. 30 or so years ago, she was an instantly memorable teacher in class and out ... thinking of South's ski club in particular. But has time passes it stands out just how rare a gift it is, how lucky we were to cross her path and how she represents the kind of person we want to be.

We only had the pleasure of knowing Gloria for a short time, but have always considered her a good friend. We met while playing on the same tennis team. She has been such an inspiration to so many people and we will all miss her so. Gloria and Jeri were such a dynamic duo in so many ways. I think if more people fashioned their way of life to follow them the world would be a much better place to live. We do take comfort in knowing that Gloria is watching over us now. WE LOVE YOU JERI. I had the privilege of meeting and working with Gloria while volunteering at West Valley Middle School. I learned a great deal about young people, counseling, compassion, fortitude, and keeping a great sense of humor. I appreciate Gloria for her commitment to teach new school counselors. She touched many lives and will continue to influence many more. What a legacy.

Ms. Fastabend was a wonderful mentor. At South Jr. High she always made me feel special and I could achive anything that I wanted. I recently saw her at St. Als and she remembered my name after all these years. That's one of the things that made her so special. She gave her full attention to everything that she did. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends for their loss. She will be missed.

It is amazing the impact that one person can have on another without them truly having realized it. My time with Gloria was far too short, yet incredibly impactful. I worked last school year running groups at East Valley. She was one of the most kind, genuine, and humble people I have ever known. She will be missed, but she lives on in all of us that have had the blessing of her touching our lives. Peace be with you Gloria.

Gloria was my senior Government teacher and I loved that class. She was not only one of my teachers but also an amazing co-worker at South Middle School and East Valley Middle School. Her compassion for our students was amazing. I will truly miss her smiling face. My sympathy to her family, you are all in my prayers.

Gloria was my supervisor during internship. I felt then, as I still do, that I was extremely fortunate to learn from a person who exemplified the type of counselor I'd like to be and whose professional integrity, ethics, skill, and commitment will continue to inspire me in my own work. She was an immensely generous and genuinely compassionate person who encouraged me when I needed it and went out of her way to help me. She's the kind of person I want to emulate personally and professionally. I'll carry what I learned from her with me always.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Gloria at the Red Cross when she served as a mental health volunteer. She was insightful, compassionate and funny. It was a pleasure to send her on volunteer assignments and I appreciated her committment and willingness to work so hard even when I knew she didn't always feel well. I was devistated to hear of her passing. My deepest sympathy to Gloria's family and Geri. You are in my thoughts. Katie

Jeri - You are in my thoughts and prayers. I loved Gloria (and you) so much and I hope that you both knew that. You and Gloria were an inspiration not only to me, but to the other patients that sat in the waiting room with you as well. Please take care and know that we have a precious angel watching over us now.

Gloria was an angel that touched the lives of many. I will always be grateful for all the wonderful memories that I have of times shared with Gloria (and Jeri). I know I am a better person because Gloria was in my life.

My family, Phil and "cousin" Scott also send their regards. They have fond memories of Gloria and Jeri coming to visit us in Colorado. Once to help us when we were building and the other as a surprise visit on my birthday. Gloria was always willing to lend a helping hand no matter where. She also seemed to always know the right thing to say or the perfect gift to give - sleigh bells when my father passed away.

Gloria is in a special place and someday we will all be together again, laughing and sharing memories of a different time.
