Shirley Briggs Obituary

Boise - Shirley Anne Churchill Briggs passed away on February 8, 2023, in Boise. She was born in Smelterville, Idaho on November 26, 1931, to William Henry "Harry" Churchill and Margaret Shirley Kellogg, the youngest of two children. She was raised in Smelterville and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1949. She joined her brother, Doug Churchill, at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho to study music - piano and organ.

Mom first met her husband, William "Bill" W. Briggs while she was at the University of Idaho. They married on March 31, 1951, in Boise, Idaho. Over the next 3 years, Bonnie, Dean and Pam joined the family in Boise, Idaho, with Anne adding to the family ten years later.

Mom was a very kind and caring woman to all she knew. Mom took pride in keeping her home as well as keeping track of her active children. The family grew up in a close neighborhood creating strong bonds that continue to this day. Tuffy and Helen Wolfe joined them in many of their travels from Canada to Arizona, with many happy times in Boise.

Over the years, Mom opened her home to her daughters' friends, Kim (Moyer) Wegener and Cindy (Parker) Peterson. Mom was active in volunteer organizations, including the Junior League of Boise, St. Alphonsus Hospital Volunteer, and Professional Engineers of Idaho Wives, Parent/Teachers Association, and Idaho state elections. She played in multiple bridge clubs from the time she learned in college and played for almost 70 years, developing lifelong friendships with Dorothy de Reus and Pat (Redmond) Lee.

Mom is survived by her children, Bonnie Schwartz, Dean (Debbie) Briggs, and Pamela Briggs; her grandchildren Jaimes Hewitt, Christian (Harmony) Hewitt, Jennifer Briggs, Nicholas Briggs, and Brandon Briggs; her greatgrandchildren Gavin Hewitt, Isaac Hewitt, Victoria Hewitt, Morgan Schoonover, Jordan Woodward and Brooklynn Craft; her great-great grandchild Quinlee James Lewallen; her son-in-law Ryan (Kathy) Buzzini; and her niece and nephews, David Churchill, Dawn Davis, Mark Churchill, and Steven Churchill.

Mom was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Briggs; her daughter, Anne M. Briggs Buzzini; her son-in-law, Carl Schwartz; her brother, Doug (Phyllis) Churchill and her brother-in-law Carlyle (Maxine) Briggs.

The service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3 at the Cloverdale Funeral Home at 1200 North Cloverdale Road, Boise, ID 83713. Reception will follow. At the request of Shirley, in lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Alphonsus Foundation Women's Healthcare Fund.
