Alice Marion Burt Hyde Olson
DOWNEY - Alice Marion Burt was born August 28, 1921, in Denver, Colorado, to Allen Hilton Burt and Susie Kratzer Shirley. She lived there with her parents until her mother died when Alice was nearly 2 years old. Then she and her father moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to live with her Grandmother Burt. Her father worked as an executive for the Street and Electric Railway Union of America.
Her father remarried to Hazel Irene Stotts. One daughter, Hazel Dawn Burt, was born to that union.
Alice attended Longfellow Elementary School, Bryant Junior High, and West High School for one year. Then her father died, so she moved and lived with her aunt and uncle Marion and Wilford Shurtleff. She attended her junior year at East High School and graduated in 1938 at age 16 because of the Depression.
Alice worked for a year before entering the nursing program at Salt Lake General Hospital on August 16, 1939.
She graduated in 1942, and married Dr. Charles Corydon Hyde, who had done his residency in Salt Lake. They were married in Downey, Idaho, at Dr. Hyde's family home.
Then they drove to Rio Tinto, Nevada, where Dr. Hyde worked for the Mountain City Copper Company at the clinic and the hospital until the end of World War II. Dr. Hyde obtained more training for one year in OB/GYN in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Then they moved to Battle Mountain, Nevada, where he set up his practice.
They were very happy there and were so excited to be able to adopt a son, Allen Reed Hyde, who was the joy of their life. Another son, Robert Tilton Hyde, was born to them, but he died at birth.
The family was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple August 28, 1961, on Alice's birthday.
She worked as her husband's nurse both in the clinic and the hospital in Battle Mountain for many years until Dr. Hyde's untimely death in 1963.
Alice then served in public nursing in Battle Mountain and Elko, Nevada, until she made the move to Downey in 1969. She was the administrator of the Marsh Valley Hospital for 11 years and served on the city council for 16 years over the roads, airport, fire and police. She was chairman of the board when she retired.
She has also served as Relief Society president in the Downey Ward and as the captain of Camp Red Rock of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
Alice served as the Adult Stake Special Interest chairman and met Don Henry Olson of Virginia who was the leader from his ward. They were married for time in the Logan Temple on December 6, 1974. Their granddaughter, Suzette Hyde, came to live with them in 1978, and was just like a daughter. Don preceded Alice in death in 2004. They were happily married for 30 years.
Her son Allen's work with the State Highway Department permitted him to return to Downey so he could take care of her.
Alice passed away after a short illness on Sunday, January 15, 2012, at 5:04 p.m., at the Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, with Allen and his friend, Penny Morse, close by her side.
Alice was survived at that time by her half-sister, Dawn (Joseph) Chiappino, Olympia, Washington; son, Allen Reed Hyde, Downey; two granddaughters, Suzette and Jennifer; three great-granddaughters, Ashleigh, Sadie, and Ciera; one great-grandson, Xander; and one great-great-grandson, Kaysyn Gage.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at noon in the Downey First Ward Chapel. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday morning prior to the service from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the church.
