Doris Smellie Obituary

Doris Jean Barrett Smellie
September 29, 1941 - September 9, 2017
Doris Jean Barrett Smellie (75) of Pocatello passed away peacefully in her home Sept. 9, 2017 after a valiantly fought battle with cancer. Doris was born in Missoula, Montana, Sept. 29, 1941, the second daughter of James Willis Barrett and Sylvia Ruth Sorensen Barrett. They moved to Pocatello, ID when Doris was 3 yeaers old, where she resided throughout her life. She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1959. Poky Pride ran strong for her!
On Nov. 25, 1963 she married John Dell Smellie of Buhl, ID in Lincoln, Kansas. They had two children. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls, ID Temple on May 25, 1990.
Doris has always been active in the community, her church, The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and especially with her family, attending all that her children or grandchildren did. She was always there to support and cheer us on. Doris was always willing to help and serve anyone in need. Many called her "Grandma" even if there was no relation. She radiated love and kindness to all she met. Her greatest achievement in life was that of loving Wife, Mother and Grandmother and Friend.
Doris was an avid skier and tennis player. She averaged 40 to 50 days of skiing most seasons at Pebble Creek Ski Area, her home away from home. She taught all her children, grandchildren, and many others to ski. She also loved spending time at the family cabin in Island Park, ID. Anything active, Doris did!
She was preceded in death by her parents. Doris is survived by her Sister, Darlene Barrett Pasley, her loving husband, John Dell Smellie, children, Rick Dell (Marisa) Smelle, Sue Ann (Robert) Lee. Eight Grandchildren: Jace, Bryson (Kelsea), Miranda and Camryn Smellie; Justin (Aubrey), Aaron, Brayden and Jordan Lee. One great-grandchild, Lillian Dawn Lee.
A visitation will be held, Friday Sept. 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and again Saturday Sept. 16 from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, with the funeral at 11:00 AM. All events will take place at the LDS Church House at 135 S. 7th Ave. Pocatello, ID. Graveside services to follow Mountain View Cemetary.
In Lieu of flowers, please donate to the Pocatello Sunrise Lion's club, who provide eye ware to those in need. Donations can be made at any Ireland Bank or the Downard Funeral Home.
