Grandma

Good morning, I am Kathy Murray and I represent Judy´s side of the grandkids, also in attendance is Melody and our late sisters husband and daughter Megan and Mel Codd. Amanda, David and Dan unfortunately have tested positive for Covid and were unable to travel.

I´m known for sharing highlight and accomplishments in my life to the point of annoyance. This year I hit a big accomplishment and find myself sharing it proudly many times and I would like to share it with all of you.
In April I quietly and selfishly spent 4 days with Grandma playing Yogi and hanging out in her apartment. You see I turned 60 and I wanted to share it with my Grandma. What an accomplishment for us both. So I have shared every chance I get over the past few months. 60 and still have my Grandma.

I was kinda of a sickly kid and some of my early memories of Grandma are of her being my nurse through scarletina and other illnesses. Giving me cod liver oil and lemon juice, bathing me and applying cold compresses to cool my fevers and finding that special dark place in a big comfy bed with cool crisp sheets. Thank you for that.

Her career as a cosmetologist meant my siblings and I were her early clients she gave us our first haircut, perms and brow waxing. Mel would get super dark tans during the summers and one year grandma gave her a tight perm and she received comments on her Afro. Amanda recalls attending Mel´s college graduation as hot and having thick long hair grandma pulled out her scissors and gave her a pixie cut. She groomed us all well. To me she was the sheikest Grandma around. Always sporting the latest style and color.

Her house was our first playground and park climbing her trees playing hide and seek inside and out. Her famous kitchen drawer of toys, endless bouncing on and across the various beds in her vast basement bedroom on 3rd street in Pocatello. Grandma was well appointed in the MCM design and she was a meticulous house keeper with so many grandkids their next house was next door to a park with a playground to get us outside and save her house. So many hours spent on the swings and merry go round meeting new kids some that have kept in touch with her all these years. I recently reminisce many of our antics and adventures with Tony who at this point in his dementia journey still has his long term memory.

Grandma shared her love of sports, swimming with us at Portal Park Green canyon, Soda and Lava Hot Springs. She shared dance, bowling, golf ( I believe Tony, David, Dawna and I had the privilege of playing in her last round for her 90th birthday celebration.

Games were always taught and played. Through Yogi I meet her friends like Mary (Mary thank you for all you have done for her) Grandma shared other friends
through games and sports and I have fond memories of Phoebe and Bell which would accompany us for space burgers and cream ironports at the Tastee Treat.

She shared her fondness of arts and crafts and gardening, known for her roses and raspberries.
Raspberries and cream are one of my favorite deserts thanks to Grandma. Many summers Grandma would get us a bucket and belt and set us out in the raspberries to pick she also had us pick huckleberries. From that came her famous jam fondly known in our family as grandma jelly. Her salsa was also a big hit with our family and she shared lessons in canning too.

Road trips with Grandma were always fun and eventful, I recall when we traveled over Independence Pass in the green ford with the cab over camper, terrifying! ( I think about that ride every time I cross over that narrow Colorado pass) She liked to sing and we had many sing-alongs and always stopped for a treat. Their travels took them from Canada to Mexico, California to Florida and many trips to Alaska and Hawaii.

Thanks to Lara for coordinating so much of this gathering

The biggest lesson Grandma shared was love of family. Big dinners, reunions and lots of visits for graduation, weddings and births. I am honored to have shared in five generation of living women and again when my own grandkids came along. She inspired fiercely independent women and we are so appreciative of that.
Grandma has been our rock our inspiration and sharer of information and keeper of memories. Grandma was our home. Literally opening her doors for many of us to live with her. Crystal being the first of the many.

I forever will remember her voice messages always starting with: Kathy this is your Grandma and ending I love you. Grandma I have loved you.

Did I tell you I am 60 and still have my Grandma.
