Eugene Red Elk Obituary

Eugene Lorne Red Elk
POCATELLO - Eugene Lorne Red Elk passed away June 17, 2009, at the age of 56, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Lorne was born on February 8, 1953, to Herman Red Elk Jr. (father), and Alberta Kennedy (mother) in Poplar, Montana. His early childhood years were spent in Poplar, Montana, and Rapid City, South Dakota. He was put into a Mormon placement program and was relocated to Pocatello, Idaho, where he continued his education until his junior year of high school.
He went to Rapid City to graduate from high school with his friends, and then returned to Pocatello, where he attended and completed ISU welding school.
While in Pocatello he married Florence Van Sickle; they had three sons, Derick, Jeff and Randy. They divorced and Lorne later married Cahuilla Margaret Cabrera and had a son, Eviketmal. Lorne also helped Cahuilla raise her three children. He later met Jeanie Walesch, his loving companion for 13 years.
Lorne studied acting in California and had a passion for the entertainment and broadcasting industry. He narrated and starred in a commercial for the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. From 1979 to the present he was head of security for the American Indian Movement (AIM). He was active in the diplomacy of human rights of the American Indigenous People.
In 1996 he returned to Pocatello, where he continued his passion for broadcasting at KPVI News Channel 6 as a newsroom camera operator. He also worked part-time at Duffy's Tavern as a bouncer. He was respected and loved by all his co-workers.
Lorne's sons each have fond memories of their father to share. Derick will always remember him for the way he made you feel special and loved when he greeted you or said good-bye. Derick also loved his sense of humor. Jeff's fondest memory was of his dad's laugh and how it filled him with a warm feeling. Randy will always remember his dad for the fact that it didn't matter who you were or what walk of life, his dad would greet you with a smile and do anything for you. Among many things, Evi will never forget how his dad taught him how to ride a bike. His sons loved the proud way he would say their names when he greeted them and called them "son."
Lorne is survived by four sons, Derick Faun (Lee Marie) Red Elk and son, River Kipp, Jeffrey Kipp (Kayce Leigh) Red Elk, daughter, Taylor Loretta, sons, Tanner Jeffrey Chance and Talon Joseph Wyatt, Randal Vern (Michelle Nicole), son, Peter Vern, Eviketmal Lorne Red Elk (Jade Yvonne Edwards), sons, Sincier Macario and Promise Armani-Kai; three stepchildren, Anthiya Martinez, Siynituah Martinez and Rodney Cabrera; siblings, Valerie Faun Schurz (Royal Arnie), Herman Albert Red Elk (Bonnie), Marlon Joseph Red Elk (Gaye), Kim L. Adams (Guy); 10 nephews and three nieces. He was preceded in death by Herman and Alberta Red Elk (parents), Loretta Randi Red Elk (sister), Jessie John Red Elk (grandson)
A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Downard Funeral Home at 241 N. Garfield, Pocatello, Idaho. Interment will be at Chelsea Cemetery in Poplar, Montana.

I used to live 2 houses down from Lorne on Harrison. One time, we just hung out at Duffy's and he kept me full of pop and conversation on a really rough night for me. He was kind and caring to all in the neighborhood. He will be missed.

I was shocked to learn about Lorne's passing. While we knew each other for only a short time, he has always remained a good friend in my heart.

Lorne brought a smile to everyone he knew. He was a friend to all and always had a good word to say.

I will miss you Lorne.

Lorne, I wish I had the chance to thank you in person for all of the help you have given me but I know you will get the message and I hope it brings comfort to your family to know of all of the lives you have touched. After my divorce, you looked out for me and helped me reintegrate back into the normal world. I will never forget your kindness or generosity. I always felt safe when I was around you, I knew that you would keep an eye out for the "creeps" and that brought so much comfort to me. I am so grateful to have known you, even if it was for just a short while. I feel honored and blessed that you were a part of my life. God bless you, my friend!

Lorne, I miss the hugs and kisses I got from you every time I saw you. I miss your voice and especially your laughter, I can hear it as I write this.

You were truly one of the most wonderful people I have met, I have learned so much about loving people and understanding people just from watching you and your interactions with everyone around you. You were an inspiration to so many. Your memory will never fade.

To Jeanie and your children, Thank you for sharing him with all of us at Duffy's, it was an honor to know him and he is greatly missed.
