Gary Neil Gunter, 90, of McCammon, Idaho, passed away peacefully at home on November 3, 2025. He was born on November 26, 1934, in Pocatello, Idaho.
Gary grew up in Robin, Ogden, and McCammon. He grew up spending a lot of time with his Capell cousins, who were like brothers to him. Together they shared many adventures and built lifelong friendships that he cherished throughout his life.
He graduated from McCammon High School in 1953, where he served as student body president and co-captain of the football team. Soon after, he joined the U.S. Army and served from 1954 to 1956 in Germany as a helicopter mechanic.
In 1954, Gary married his high school sweetheart, Janet Raymond. Together they built a loving home and raised four children.
After his military service, Gary worked for Pacific Fruit Express in Pocatello and later became Postmaster of McCammon, a job he held for 25 years. He took pride in serving his community and was known for going above and beyond.
Gary was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings over the years. He and Janet also spent 12 years serving together in the Idaho Falls Temple, something they both treasured.
He loved the outdoors and spent many happy days hunting and fishing with family and friends. Annual hunting trips and opening day at Hawkins Reservoir were some of his favorite traditions.
Gary was a talented woodworker who loved creating clocks, napkin holders, lamps, rocking chairs, and cradles for his grandchildren. His handiwork can be found in many family homes and throughout the community. He often donated his wood creations to local fundraisers and benefit events, always looking for ways to help those in need. Gary had a generous heart and was quick to lend a hand-usually quietly and without wanting any recognition.
Gary will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and lifelong devotion to his family, faith, and community. He lived a good and full life surrounded by those he loved, always giving more than he took. Service was simply part of who he was-he found joy in helping others and never hesitated to step in when someone needed a hand.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Janet Gunter of McCammon; his children, Donna (Scott) Emfield of Ammon, Idaho, Alex Gunter of Vancouver, Washington, Cindy Lantz of Downey, Idaho, and Wendy (Todd) Betty of McCammon. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother, Martell (Jill) Gunter of McCammon, and his sister, Nadine (Jay) Marlow of Wapello, Idaho.
Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Paradis, a grandson Jeremy Anderson and a son-in-law, Carl Lantz
The family would like to thank Symbii Home Health and Hospice for their love and compassionate care.
Funeral services will be held on Friday November 7th at the McCammon LDS Stake Center at noon with a viewing beginning at 10:30. Following the funeral he will be laid to rest in the Norton Cemetery in McCammon.
