Hazel Niece Obituary

Hazel Niece
August 16, 1929 - December 25, 2014
Hazel Jean (Jeanie) Niece, age 85, passed away peacefully on Christmas morning, December 25, 2014, at her daughter Sheila's home in Challis, Idaho.
Hazel was born August 17, 1929 to Slim (Melvin B) and Stella Jane (Mavity) Chivers in Challis, Idaho. She had two siblings: Buck (Franklin) Chivers and Leah Howell. She attended elementary and secondary schools in Challis and college in Oregon. She married William R. Niece in Oregon on December 24, 1948. They returned to Idaho and had two children; Sheila Funk and Richard (Pam) Niece. In 1953 Bill and Hazel divorced.
Hazel worked in Challis for a time, and then moved to Great Falls, Montana and worked for Garrett Freight Line as a bookkeeper. She returned to Challis and began work with the Forest Service in April 1957. She started as a clerk typist (GS 2) and quickly advanced in her job. She was transferred to Kalispell, Montana on the Flathead National Forest August 1970. She was later transferred to the Glacier Ranger District, and then moved to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Ketchum, Idaho. In March of 1978 she was promoted to a budget officer (GS 11) in the Caribou National Forest Service, Pocatello, Idaho. She retired from this position January 1, 1986.
Hazel wasn't one to be idle. She worked part-time for the Pocatello YWCA from 1986 to 1989 and the Pocatello Police Department from 1991 to her retirement in February 2001. She loved to crochet and we all have something she made.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Funk, Challis, and her son, Richard (Pam) Niece, of Salt Lake City, Utah; her grandchildren, Shawna (Joe) Miller, Tina Funkhouser (Kenn Lamson), Matthew (Karissa) Niece, and Megan Niece (Ryan), and three great grandchildren, Danielle, Nathan, and Alyssa with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents Slim and Stella, her brother, Buck Chivers, and sister, Leah Howell.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Spring 2015. Arrangements by Jones & Casey Funeral Home of Challis, Idaho.

Jim and I were saddened to hear of Hazel Jean's passing. She was a good friend to our mom and each of us. She actually was not just a friend but a part of the "Shelman" family. We will miss her warmth and great sense of humor. She was the best of the best.
