Kurt Billmeyer Obituary

Kurt Conrad Billmeyer
POCATELLO - Kurt Conrad Billmeyer died at his home on Friday, April 18, 2008, at the age of 52, after a courageous, painful, scientific battle against prostate cancer, including clinical trials at Franciscan Skemp and Virginia Piper Cancer Center in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He was born August 22, 1955, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Bette (Adamson) and Charles George Billmeyer Jr. ,"Chuck." Kurt graduated from Pocatello High School in 1973. He then attended the University of Idaho, where he made lifelong friends in his FIGI fraternity. Kurt later graduated from Idaho State University and began his business career as a third-generation manager of Partsco Warehouse and Billmeyer Auto Parts for 14 years. He later earned a master of arts from Idaho State University in organizational communication.
He married Cynthia Allison on September 22, 1990. He then earned a Ph.D. from the University of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Kurt served as a professor at the University of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff, Arizona, Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, and the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Upon the progression of his illness, he and his wife and daughter, Allison Marie, returned to Pocatello to rest in the hands of God and family as cancer robbed him of his body.
Kurt will be remembered by many for his love of collegiate sports and baseball, his strong interest in politics, social justice and absolutely enjoying time with his adored daughter, his students and colleagues. Kurt enjoyed traveling, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and supporting the Chicago Cubs.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia, daughter, Allison Marie, and mother, Bette Billmeyer, all of Pocatello, Idaho. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles G. Billmeyer Jr., Aunt Janet Hansen, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Billmeyer Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Adamson.
Memorials are encouraged to be sent to Angel on My Shoulder, 1611 Pine Tree Lane, P.O. Box 747 Street, St. Germaine, Wis. 54538, or The Fairy Godmother, 213 West Institute Place, Suite 509 Chicago, Illinois 60619, or at an account set up for Allison Marie Billmeyer at Ireland Bank, c/o Jay Colonel, 2715 Pole Line Road, Pocatello, Idaho 83201.
The family wishes to thank Mr. and Mrs. George Katsilometes and Creekside Hospice, specifically, Toni, Sue, Star and volunteer Jeff Davies.
Go Cubs!

It is difficult to lose such a good friend as Kurt. I have very few memories of the 70's and early 80's that don't have Kurt as a central figure. I owe him alot. He was my best friend at a time when that really meant something. He influenced my life in many positive ways and I will always be grateful for his freindship. While we drifted apart after marriage and kids, it was all the shared experiences that created those great memories of youth. I can't think of Kurt without remembering his passion for sports, the Cubs and politics. After years of no contact, he reached out to me and we had many long phone conversations over the past few years. I am so thankful that he did this. I know he faced his final challenge with courage and determination. The sense of loss we feel at a distance is only a fraction of that felt by his loved ones. They are in our prayers.

Ironies of ironies. The "professional student" was finally a professor, cherishing the academic environment and sharing his vast knowledge and passion for learning with others, only to be taken away too soon. A lifelong Cubs fan, Kurt stuck with the team through its ups (very few) and downs (almost all the time). Now, with Kurt gone, the Cubs look to be at long last a World Series contender. If there's a WGN in heaven, I'm sure Kurt is tuned in to the Cubbies, while vigilantly watching out over his loved ones. To Cynthia, Allison and Bette, my thoughts and prayers are with you. To Kurt, I'll miss you, my good friend.
