Mickey Davis Obituary
Mickey D. Davis
DOWNEY - Mickey D. Davis passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, California, due to complications of Mantle Cell Lymphoma. He was born December 5, 1946, in Roswell, New Mexico, to Kenneth and Gwendolyn Adams Davis. He married Freddie Marie Meeks on October 9, 1967, in Sanford, Florida. They were together for 41 years.
Mickey served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1975 as a photographer and was stationed aboard the USS Independence in 1968 and the USS Midway from 1970 to 1975 offshore of Vietnam. He spoke often of his experiences aboard the Midway with both fond and troubling memories. Mickey was confined to a wheelchair and was legally blind from diabetes but was heartened over the last few years by other veterans and strangers who would shake his hand and welcome him home, thanking him for his service to our great country. The gesture "made his day" each time. His last wish was to visit the USS Midway which is now a museum in San Diego and he visited the ship the same day he was admitted to the hospital for the final time.
Upon leaving the Navy he went on to obtain an AS Degree in Criminal Justice and served as a Sheriff's Deputy in Texas. He also obtained an AAS Degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado, where he graduated Valedictorian for the class of 1999. But his dream came true in February 2009 when, although legally blind, he obtained his BS Degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University.
Mickey is survived by his wife, Freddie, and son, Michael, of the family home. Three daughters, Cheri and husband Enz Fletcher of Belize, Vicki and husband Brian Perry of Pocatello and Tina and husband Kenneth Strandberg of Maitland, Florida. Four grandchildren, Brittney and Brandon Perry of Pocatello, Jeremy Perry and Megan Strandberg of Maitland, Florida. Sister, Bobbie Jean Kizer of Aztec, New Mexico and one uncle, Don and wife Glenda of Peyton, Colorado and special friend and neighbor John Bowen of Downey.
He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Grandparents Raymond and Ruth Adams, Gene and Dessie Solomon and three uncles, Ray, Mac and Odell Adams.
Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Downey Cemetery.
We are heartbroken by your passing, but you know that you are loved and will be greatly missed by all of us.
