The family moved to Pocatello in 1947, where he completed the remainder of his eighth grade year at Franklin Junior High. The following year Nathan attended Pocatello High School, where he graduated in 1952.
He completed a four-year electrical apprenticeship at the Union Pacific Railroad in Pocatello, where he continued working for the next 44 years until his retirement in 1996.
During his senior year of high school he met his life companion, Muriel Jean Skinner, and were married in 1954. Nathan and Muriel were blessed with five children.
Nathan was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Idaho National Guard for several years, where he trained and worked as an aircraft mechanic. Nathan continued a great fondness for aviation and worked toward achieving a private pilot's license.
