Philip Meyer Obituary
December 5, 1965 - February 15, 2016
Pastor Philip J. Meyer, age 50 of Buffalo, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016 at the Buffalo Hospital due to ALS. Philip John Meyer was born in Faribault, Minnesota on December 5, 1965 to Robert and Karen Meyer. The family moved to Rochester in 1968.
He attended Rochester Central Lutheran School through 9th grade and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1984. He attended Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated with a BA Director of Christian Education Degree with a minor in Church Relations in 1989. His ministry began at Camp Luther in Wisconsin. He was ordained within the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in 2009. Pastor Phil shared his love of the Lord Jesus Christ by serving at congregations in Idaho, North Dakota, and Minnesota, most recently for St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo, Minnesota.
Philip Meyer met Vanessa Poston in 1994 and they married in 1995 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Idaho Falls. They were blessed with two sons, Dylan and Jesse.
Phil enjoyed writing and sharing music, including playing the piano and guitar. He enjoyed the beaches of Cozumel, golfing, and cheering for the Minnesota Vikings.
Phil is survived by his wife, Vanessa and sons, Dylan and Jesse; parents, Robert and Karen Meyer of Rochester, MN; sister, Paula (Mark) Meyer, Joshua and Shealeigh of Longmont, CO; brother, Brian (Jill) Meyer, Brennan, Emily, Lincoln, McKinley of Moorhead, MN; and other family members and friends, including Kathryn Elsen, his dedicated caregiver during the last months of his life. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and infant sister, Sarah Meyer.
A celebration of Phil's life will be held Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 6 to 9 PM with prayer service and a time of sharing at 7 PM in the Family Life Center at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buffalo. There will be a visitation starting at 9:00 AM with funeral service starting at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 22, 2016 in the Family Life Center at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buffalo. Interment will be at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.
Memorials are suggested to the ALS Association Minnesota Chapter, or St. John's Lutheran Church College Scholarship Fund.

What a privilege to help care for you and learn from you as you walked a difficult path at such a young age. We are so blessed to have known you and to have gotten to experience your kindness and sense of humor. Our hearts and prayers are with Vanessa and the boys and your extended family. You were strong, determined, funny and sincere. Thanks for knowing and fulfilling your purpose here on earth. We will meet again one day and walk the streets of gold with new legs - maybe even run and no doubt, worship together, Jesus, the prince of peace. You will be missed, Phil. I am so grateful you were in the cast of characters God put into my life to learn from and care for. "I think you met your match . . . " Thank you for your sense of humor. You were such an inspiration. Not good bye, but "to be continued."

My heart and prayers go out to you and your family at the death of your son and brother. Children are simply not supposed to die before parents - but sometimes God has other plans. I am so sorry for the loss of a great person and a very passionate man of faith. I have not seen Phil for over 34 years but will never forget his competitive spirit and witty humor whenever we met during our early years at St. John's and RCLS. God's Blessing.

I thank God for the time He gave us Pastor here in Pocatello, Idaho at Faith Lutheran Church. I pray that God will be with his family his church family and friends and to remind all of us even if it is hard that Phil is no longer in pain and I can see him playing his music with my mom praising God. We send God's blessings to each one of your family.
We were honored and proud to have spent time with Phil when he was here in Idaho Falls Idaho.
We were grateful to have him as part of the ceremony to recommit ourselves in our lives and our marriage to the Lord .we will always remember him. Phil was a big part of our ceremony.
May you as a family feel the love that Phil gave to everyone around him return and give you comfort .

I am so sorry to hear about Pastor Meyers passing my prayers are with you and your family and his congregation and friends. I will never forget the help and blessing he did for my mom, Marlys and AL Bethke passing and how he went to New Ulm for our family. God Bless and Rest In Peace.
