Robert Colson Obituary
Robert Farrel Colson, 93, of Blackfoot, Idaho, passed away at his home on June 18, 2025.
Bob was born on February 9, 1932, in Aberdeen, Idaho, to Byrd Franklin Colson and Afton Ileen Cooper Colson. He was the second son in the family, following his brother Frank, who was born just 11 months earlier. Frank and Bob were not only close in age-sharing the same age for three weeks each year-but were also best buddies throughout their entire lives.
As children, their family moved frequently, following their father's construction jobs across the Intermountain West. They lived in places such as Swan Valley, ID; Edgemont, SD; the Pahsimeroi Valley, ID; Sterling, ID; and Happy's Inn, MT. During World War II, the family settled temporarily in Mountain Home, ID, where their father worked as a carpenter on the Mountain Home Air Force Base. Eventually, the family returned to Moreland, ID, which became their lasting home.
Bob graduated from Moreland High School, which later became Snake River High School, in 1950. During his school years, he was active in sports, playing football, basketball, and baseball.
In 1951, Bob met Marilyn Thomas, the "love of his life." They were married on January 5, 1952, and together they built a beautiful life and family. They welcomed their first son, Robert Griff, on January 23, 1953; their second son, James Dee, on January 1, 1956; and their beloved daughter, Robin Ileen, on August 8, 1961. Bob's children and grandchildren were always his greatest joy, and he devoted his life to loving and supporting them. He shared a special, personal bond with every one of them.
Throughout his life, Bob worked in a variety of jobs, always known for his dependability and loyalty. In 1956, he began working for American Linen Supply (ALSCO), where he spent 22 years. He later worked as a bus driver for the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) for 17 years, retiring on April 30, 1994. The riders on Bob's bus always remembered him for his kindness, quick wit, and the playful jokes that made their daily commutes brighter.
Bob enjoyed all things outdoors, including hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, whitewater rafting and riding his horses. He was an accomplished horseman who willingly passed on his knowledge to the next generation. Bob and Marilyn spent much of their time at their cabin near Palisades Reservoir, where they spent countless weekends with their family creating memories. They also loved to travel, taking many trips to see children and grandchildren. Bob especially cherished the days that he could take his grandchildren fishing on the Pashimeroi River and the creeks in the Palisades area. He was a constant presence at family activities, never missing a ballgame or event.
He was a devoted member of Elk's Club Lodge 1416 where he served in many different roles and attended Jason Lee United Methodist Church.
With his joyful spirit, quick humor, and genuine love for those around him, Bob was someone people simply loved to be near-his warmth and kindness made everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room. His love, laughter, and unforgettable presence will never be forgotten.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Marilyn; his son Griff (Diane) Colson; his son James (Gina) Colson; his daughter Robin (Terry) Griggs; and his brother-in-law Danny Thomas. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren: Carrie (Seth) Cole, Cleve (Brooke) Colson, Cole (Neasha) Colson, Clinton (Ashley) Colson, Mandi (Matt) Beard, Rob (Danielle) Colson, Tony (Laura) Colson, Angie Colson, Dillon (Ale) Griggs, and Cody Griggs; and by 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved brother Frank and sister-in-law Alice; and his brother-in-law Kelly Thomas.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to those who provided such loving care to Bob at home: We would like to especially thank Grandson Cody Griggs for his devotion; and also thank Great-Grandson John Colson, Great-Granddaughter Carlie Colson, Samy Roberts, Joy Taylor, Chris Evans and Tyler Mecham. Bob was deeply appreciative of the kindness and care he received.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home. The family will greet friends and loved ones one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the church. A luncheon will follow the service at the church.
Based on his wishes, cremation will occur and his ashes will be interred at a later date during a private ceremony.
