Ann DeWitt Obituary

Ann McCleary DeWitt went to Heaven on May 3, 2009 surrounded by her loving family at her home, following a courageous battle with breast cancer. During her two-and-a-half years of cancer treatments, Ann served as an inspiration to her fellow patients and always presented herself with grace, beauty and a positive spirit. Ann was born March 9, 1967 in Missoula, Mont. to Charles and Patricia Bennett, joining her sister Mary Pat. Ann attended Pierce Elementary and Timberline High School in Pierce, Id. Ann was Student Body President, and graduated class Valedictorian in 1985. Besides excelling in academics she was an excellent athlete. Ann attended the University of Idaho where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1990. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority where she made many lifelong friends. Philanthropy was always important to Ann, even as a young adult. During her college career she chaired the annual U of I Red Cross blood drive. Throughout her life she continued to generously give to the community around her. Upon graduating she went to work for Deloitte Touche as a CPA in the Boise, ID office. Soon thereafter she and Jane Cliff built the Ethan Allen Home Interiors in Boise where Ann served as President and co-owner until her death. Ann was also an active member of the Boise community. She was a member of the Junior League for 10 years where she served as Treasurer. She also served as a member of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce. Ann served on the Children's Home Society Board as Treasurer from 2000-2006. In 1993 Ann married Paul David DeWitt at Cathedral of the Rockies. They were blessed with two children, Paul Michael (12) and Elizabeth (Lizzy-10). Her children were her pride and joy. Ann enjoyed attending her children's various activities including ski races, soccer games, baseball games, football games and dance and piano recitals. She was a dedicated parent volunteer at Riverside Elementary as well as a volunteer soccer coach for her daughter in her younger years. Even while very ill, Ann enjoyed attending all her kid's activities, including her visits to Simplot fields. A lifelong athlete, Ann played competitive tennis and qualified with her team to play in Nationals in California in 2003. An avid runner, Ann ran Robie Creek twice and achieved her goal of running a marathon before she turned 40. In October, 2006, just six days following her diagnosis of breast cancer, Ann completed the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco, CA in under four hours surrounded by cheering friends. She also enjoyed golf, was an excellent skier and an accomplished pianist. Ann lived her life to the fullest as if she knew it would be short. Ann's passion for life was unmistakable as evidenced by her unending energy, enthusiasm and joy in all she did and all she shared with family and friends. Her beautiful spirit will be remembered and terribly missed by all those who lives were touched by her. Ann is survived by her husband Paul, her two children Paul Michael and Lizzy, her parents Charlie and Pat, her sister Mary Pat Thompson (Roger), niece Ali and nephew Derek Thompson. With Father and Mother in-law Paul and Marilyn DeWitt, sister-in-law Karen DuBois (Mark), nephews Zachary and Matthew, brother-in-law Wayne DeWitt (Brenda), niece Brittney and nephew Joshua, and numerous aunts and uncles. A celebration of Ann's life will be held at the Cathedral of the Rockies, 11th and Hays, Boise on Friday May 8, 2009 at 4 p.m. Reception to follow. Graveside burial at Dry Creek Cemetery, 9600 Hill Road, Boise on Saturday May 9, 2009, time to be announced at the memorial. Dear Dewitt Family, I'm so sorry for your loss. I had the great privilege of working closely with your family and caring for Paul Michael from infancy to 18 months. I'm blessed to have known such a remarkable lady. She was so kind, caring, thoughtful and someone I looked up to. She loved her husband and adored her baby boy. She carried herself with such grace and love for life. The life she lived is a great example to us all how to live life to the fullest. She was a shining light in this world and her spirit lives on. Forgive my delayed condolences. I lost touch through the years and was recently searching for Ann and was so shocked to discover this news. She touched many lives and made a positive impact on mine. So thankful I got a chance to know her and will see her in Heaven one day. As we go into a new year, 2013, I'm inspired by Ann to be a better mom, wife, sister, friend, daughter and neighbor.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, dear Dewitt family. Her spirit truly lives on...

I know her daughter. She's my friend. Ann volunteered at our school, and was a kind person at heart. Her daughter is as charming and kind as her mother. She came to our school with a bandana on her head, but her smile was like the sun in the sky. Her eyes were like stars in the night. When my classmates heard of her passing, everybody went to her funeral, and wept. Every morning at school for a weak it was painful to see her tearful face. The prospect that Ann would never be able to hug her and say, "how was your day, honey?" was unbearable to her. Our hearts go out to them.

Though I never met Ann, I always heard wonderful things about her. After hearing of her passing I came here to give condolences. Now after reading these comments I think how blessed you all are to have had her, even for this short time. May God's grace cover you each as you remember and miss her.

I was so saddened to hear about Ann. I knew Ann for a short time in high school - she was very kind and the first one to make me feel welcome in a new school & a small town where everyone knew everyone. Her laugh was unforgettable. Over the years we ran into each other occasionally, here in Boise, and caught-up on what was going on in each of our lives. One memorable time was running up a very steep mountain (The Race To Robie Creek)- there I was, workin pretty hard to get up that hill and there beside me is Ann doing the same...(anyone who has run that race knows that it's hard to smile going up that hill) - Ann had a smile for me when she recognized who I was.
She was a wonderful person. My thoughts are with you all.

Paul and Mary Pat (and your families),

Although my recent relocation has added distance to my Boise family and friends, time stood still with my memories of Ann. I remember her in the early days when I met her through the Junior League of Boise. She always carried the pretty smile, no matter what her mood. Her striking eyes, as windows to her soul, were a reflection of her caring and generous heart. She was such a beautiful person, inside and out. I am so sorry that this world has lost a treasure such as Ann. However, I know that her spirit will continue to live within all of us. She leaves a footprint in our lives that cannot be erased. I hope that God will hold you and your families close during these times. Stay strong for each other and I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

We didn't know Ann. However, over the years that we served coffee at Eastwind Community Church we admired, we were inspired, and we were touched by her without ever having spoken more than a few words with her. Every Sunday, whether we saw her or not we felt her presence there. There is no doubt in our minds this woman is an angel. How blessed we are to have crossed paths with her. Tami and Cindy

Paul, Paul Michael and Lizzy,
Your gorgeous mother and wife always amazed me whenever I saw her. She carried herself with such poise and energy that I could never believe that she was sick. Her body might have been failing her, but her eyes and spirit never did. I'm so sorry that she will no longer be able to give you hugs.

Paul, Paul Michael, Lizzy and Family,
I had the pleasure of meeting Ann (your Mom) about two years ago when you came to church for the Photo Directory photo shoot. She had just had her double mastectomy but, never-the-less, still had such a beautiful spirit. I was instantly drawn to her and considered her a good friend as she so naturally made everyone feel. She was a true angel on earth. I know that no words can stop the hurt right now but still I feel I need to stess that so many people are praying for you right now, myself included, and also that your wife, mom, sister, daughter, friend...will always be with you.

I was only blessed to know Ann for a short time. One of the many things that stands out in my mind is how selfless Ann was. Even with all she was going through, she would always ask,"How are you and your family doing?" What a sweet, sweet, wonderful woman. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. With deepest Sympathy,

I first met Ann in the chemo suite at MSTI. I loved the times my Mom & Ann were there at the same time because Ann always lit up the room. She graciously shared advice on where she purchased her beautiful scarves and was always radiant. Ann gave me courage to face cancer to someone so close to you. She made me laugh when it was so hard to be there. Ann was always surrounded by her loving family. I believe Ann will be watching over her great husband, Paul & beautiful children. I feel so blessed to have crossed her path in this life.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing this elegant young woman, personally, but, I did admire her from afar, as she bravely swept her frail body, brilliantly colored scarf covering her head, to her children's activities at Riverside School. Her eyes were always brightly lit, and she wore a glowing smile. Kindness and caring exuded from her being. I would hope that I could manage even half the graciousness and bravery she showed, in similar circumstances. She was surely an angel on earth to inspire us all!

Paul, Charlie, Pat, Mary Pat-
My heart breaks for you all to lose your dear one. I loved growing up knowing the power team that is the Bennett family and then coming back to Idaho and reconnecting with and admiring Ann (and Paul) at several Junior League and Children's Home Society events and in recent years at Eastwind. I'll truly miss her authenticness, her lack of pretention and her unbridled joy for life. I will pray that God will hold you all in His comforting arms.

Ann's family,
We know all of you on so many different levels and in so many different ways: North Idaho, Engaged Encounter with Mary Pat & Roger, kids' sports, pool parties, OLR, my kids babysitting your kids. Story: Ann and I shared our boys' due date. Took her awhile to forgive me for being early and Paul Michael for being late! Her love of life and people was a gift she shared every day. Know that we are here for you in whatever way you need us. Especially in the future when life goes on and you need to remember her bright spirit.

I was so sorry to hear this news. I have many fond memories of her growing up in Pierce. Ann pulled me out of a snowbank when we were in highschool and taught me to ski. It must have been a miserable day for her, but to her credit she stayed with me all day when it would have been easy to just cruise past like everyone else. Her kindness was unsurpassed and will be missed.

Good Anne Story - it was the summer of 2002 and I was taking the kids to Roaring Springs - Anne whips into the driveway of my house, parking her car sideways to block mine from leaving and she hops out waving her arms, all excited, and comes up to the car to say a few words to Lizzy and she asked about money and I told her that we were okay and she gives me "'a look'" and reaches into her purse and pulls out a bunch of cash and simply throws it into the car - bills falling all over the place - and tells us to have a great time, she hops back into her car and zooms off. She was a fantastic woman, one of the nicest and caring human beings God has ever placed on the earth. She will absolutely be missed by all.
