Arlene Dodd Obituary

Arlene Dodd, a devoted mother, educator, and woman of quiet strength, passed away on January 20, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born during the Great Depression to immigrant parents, Arlene grew up very poor as one of seven siblings. Those early years shaped a deeply stoic character. She learned endurance, restraint, and self-reliance early in life, meeting hardship without complaint and carrying herself with steady dignity.

Arlene graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1958 and married Adelmer "Del" Dodd in 1959. In 1966, they moved to McCall, Idaho, a place Arlene came to consider her true home.

Much of Arlene's life was defined by self-sacrifice. She embraced an active outdoor life alongside her husband and sons - sailing, skiing, snowmobiling, and mountain biking - not because these pursuits always came naturally to her, but because they mattered to her family.

Teaching was Arlene's true calling. She began teaching in 1971 and devoted more than two decades to education before retiring in 1994. Teaching was, for her, an act of service. In 1995, she returned to McCall. Outside the classroom, she found peace in gardening and joy in her family.

Arlene is survived by her sons, Patrick Dodd (and his wife, Olga) and Jeff Dodd (and his wife, Traci); her granddaughter, Ailish; and her grandson, Griffin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Del, who passed away in 2023.

Arlene will be remembered for her stoic grace, quiet courage, and a life lived without need for recognition. Her legacy lives on in the lives she taught, supported, and loved.

My deepest condolences to Arlene's family. I wish I had known she was still alive as I would have reached out. Mrs. Dodd was my 2nd grade teacher in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho--this would have been around 1980. She made a huge impact on my life even at that young age. She pushed me to give more to others, and she really fostered my natural love of reading. As a child, I felt like she really "saw" into the core of who I was, and that felt like such a gift. I have always remembered her gratefully and fondly, and even though she hasn't been a part of my life, I will mourn this loss. Rest in peace, dear one.

Arlene and Del were the best. Worked with Del at BCC and have great memories of them both as a team who did everything together.

Arlene and I were fellow teachers at Mary Mac in Meridian. Her devotion to teaching was evident in the excellence of her instruction. Family was hugely important to her and she was immensely proud of her sons. She loved gardening and she considered an aching back a worthy exchange for the blossoms in her yard. Bette Boone
