Carole Poches Obituary

Carole Ione Poches August 15, 1938 - May 13. 2011 August 15, 1938 an angel was born in farmhouse atop a windy Nebraska hill. Carole grew up with three brothers. They were raised by their mother Dorothy, grandfather Leroy (Colonel) and great uncle Charlie Whipple. She attended a one room school house, grades 1 thru 6 before moving on to school in the town of Belden. Along with her family she did the normal chores that go with dry land farming 320 acres. She graduated from Belden High School in 1956 in a class of eleven. Carole began her college career at Wayne State Teachers College in a two year program leading to a Nebraska teaching certification. It was there she met the man who loved her for the rest of her life, Ron. She began her teaching career in Mead, Nebraska teaching first grade and coaching girls volley ball. June 1959 they were married and shortly thereafter Ron was recalled into the navy. They lived in various USN locations and while he was away on duty, she attended school at Long Beach State and cared for daughter Donna Sue. Prior to his return to civilian life, Carole re-entered Wayne State to renew her credentials. In 1963 they moved to Omaha where Carole taught several years in the impoverished area of North Omaha and eventually to a school in the suburbs closer to their home, all the while pursuing her degree at University of Nebraska-Omaha. She graduated with her BS degree in 1972. Along the way they had two more daughters, Cynthia Jean and Beth Ann. After 13 years the family moved to Boise, Idaho in 1977. Carole continued her teaching career first at Ustick Elementary and then at Eagle Hills Elementary for a total of twenty one years in the Meridian School district. She taught first grade most of those years with a strong emphasis on reading. Her love of children knew no boundaries. Carole had many loves in addition to her family. She loved BSU football/basketball, snow skiing and water skiing and fishing, both salt water and fresh. She water skied until September of 2009 when at age 70 she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She snow skied the following season before having to hang up the boards. She and Ron were season pass holders to Bogus EVERY year 1977 through 2010-11 as well as season ticket holders to the Broncos from 1977 to present. In the first 32 seasons she missed only 3 home games and made many, many away game trips. Aside from her family Carole most loved children and spent many summer and week end hours in the class room working on those things that facilitated learning for her students. Carole is survived by her husband Ron, daughters Donna S. Woodby, Cynthia J. Dorian and Beth A. Poches as well as grandsons, Cable Amsden, Jacob Amsden and granddaughter Emily Amsden and grandson Conor Alldredge and great-grandson Chase Alldredge. Also surviving are her three brothers Ronald, Larry and Donald Whipple and son-in-law Terry Woodby. She has numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of life at the Cloverdale Funeral Home, Saturday, May 21st at 2 p.m. with reception following. In lieu of flowers she has requested contributions be made to the St Luke's Children's Hospital, Boise, Idaho. You are encouraged to wear your Boise State Bronco colors! The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the many, many care givers at St. Luke's, MSTI and St. Luke's hospice. A very special thanks to the staff at MSTI and 4th floor outpatient, as well as Drs. N. Zuckerman and M. Szentes. The family was relieved of a great deal of angst and frustrations by their intense interest and care.

Ron and Carole and my husband and I would meet for lunch every couple of weeks. It was such fun to just enjoy each others company. We would laugh and enjoy family sort of stuff. Carole is gone as is my dear partner but the beautiful memories remain.

Mrs. Poaches was my 1st grade teacher 45 years ago. She is one teacher who stood out to me and made a lasting impression. I can´t tell you most of my teachers names I had in school, but I often think back to her. So many great memories being in her class.

Aunt Carole was a beautiful lady with a fantastic attitute for life. She never ever aged, and accepted her path in life, truely lived it to the end. Her spirit will be missed but never ever forgotten nor will our love for her.

Dear Ron and family,

I will remember Carole as a very active woman who not only surpassed me in years but also in her ability to ski and waterski! In fact, that was my first encounter with her 21 years ago as an exchange student in Boise. We went waterskiing to Hell`s canyon. I am grateful for the many trips we made together in the US and in Germany, grateful to her and Rons hospitality and caring. She will have a place in my heart just as the rest of your family who has given me much. I am happy our friendship has lasted for so long...

With love

"The Lord gives strength to those who are weary. Even young people get tired then stumble and fall.
But those who trust the Lord will find new strength. They will be strong like eagles soaring upward on wings; they will walk and run without getting tired."
Isaiah 40:31 CEV

We'll miss you, Carol. I wish now, more than ever, that I had spent more time with you other than a wave, a smile, a passing moment. You taught us to participate in life, not always just being spectators. So, as I begin those walks every day, know I will be spending them talking to you.

I came to know Carole in my capacity as a regional director with the Idaho Education Association. I enjoyed her fervency about teaching and her passion for teachers. She was one of Idaho's great treasures.

Aunt Carole will surely be missed. She was an inspiration to many, many people during her life-time. She courageously and graciously battled her cancer and will be remembered, by me and countless others, as a hero. When I think of her, I immediately think of her bright and shining eyes and her fun and contagious laugh; her adventurous spirit and love of life. Blessings and love to you, Uncle Ron, Donna, Cindy, Beth and to all your families.
love, Sharyn

Mrs. Poches was my 1st grade teacher at Ustick Elementary over 30 years ago. I remember her and her classroom very well. I was only as Ustick for couple years before the district changed the boundary and she is the only teacher I remembered all these years from that school. If I remember correctly her daughters would sometimes come to help her out. I can still tell you where her classroom was and how it was arraigned. She made a huge impact on this little first grader.

Ron and Family: We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend. Carole was a good friend, I always looked forward to when you two would return to Belden. The laughs and good times are found memories that I hold dear. From the bird doing a wolf whistle when someone entered the house in shorts or a shoe sticking in the ceiling in the middle of the dinning room. Know that our thoughts are with you all

Our heads are bowed, our heart are heavy. Once our family circle is broken it is so important to allow healing and hope to continue in our lives. Peace and Love to all around you. Ron & Linda

Ron & Family,

Sue and I were saddened to hear of Carole's passing. I always remember Carole from the backpacking trip that the Poches, Baileys, and Crafts took in 1980. When no one else wanted to, Carole and I hiked another 1000 feet up to view everything from the top of the mountain. Rest In Peace, Carole.
