Daniel Huff Obituary

Daniel Dale Huff 1943 - 2011 Dan Huff was born in Parsons, Kan. on April 16, 1943 and passed away May 13, 2011 at his home in Boise. Dan spent his childhood in Topeka, Kans. and attended high school and junior college in St. Joseph, Mo. He attended Washburn University in Topeka and graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1966. He received his master's degree in social work at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kans. in 1969. Dan was Chief Social Worker for the Idaho Department of Health from 1969 to 1970 and began working with the Department of Special Services at Boise State University in 1971, helping disadvantaged people learn to participate in comprehensive health planning. In 1974, he created the Field Work Program, placing 40 students in 20 agencies. From 1970 to present Dan was Professor in the School of Social Work. He also served as a member of the Social Work graduate program faculty and as faculty in the Honors College at Boise State University. Career highlights include: teaching and consulting with government agencies on welfare and community development for Oppenheimer School of Social Service, University of Zambia, Lusaka, Zambia, Africa; created and wrote The Social Work History Station website, a CSWE Millenium Project; and helped develop initial curriculum of the MSW, graduate social work program. Dan wrote and published a number of articles, papers and research grants and gave presentations across the nation including in New York, Colo. and Mo. He produced two video programs and published the book "Surviving Your Divorce" in 1979. In 2006, he authored a book on the history of social welfare and policy development. Dan loved Idaho and his adopted home of Boise. He briefly owned a small swatch of land near Atlanta. He loved to walk and often walked to work or, just for fun, on the greenbelt with friends. Dan also loved to sail, play racquetball with his friends Art and Jim, watch his beloved K.U. Jayhawks, play basketball with his friends Mark, Stan and Larry - maybe while drinking beer and munching on cashews. And about eight years ago, Dan found the love of his life, Karen Ray. They've spent time traveling on many memorable trips and have laughed and shared a lifetime of love together. They married in 2009. Dan is survived by Karen and his two children Ken and Dana, who he loved dearly and who will love him forever. His sister Jeanne will remember her oldest brother for his advice, humor and unending support. A memorial/life celebration will be held at Municipal Park at 2 p.m. Tuesday. All of Dan's friends are invited. Please bring stories and photos to share.

Teacher, mentor, colleague, and most importanly friend; Dan did so much to shape my curiosity and questioning what is and what might be, in thinking about people and the human condition. He was passionate about people and social justice with a healthy cynicism regarding bureaucracy and authority. Dan will always be a part of who I am, I miss you Dan.

Professor Dan,
You were instrumental in helping me succeed in college and start my career in the social work profession. I'll never forget how you were there for me, when I needed support, guidance and encouragement. You made me laugh and reminded me to not take life too seriously. You were the best professor I ever had and I still appreciate how you didn't get mad when I couldn't stop laughing in your class! That was some 25 years ago. It was so good to see you recently at MSTI and I'll forever cherish the hug you gave me. I will always remember you. Wishing peace to your family.

Professor Huff, you were always a source of inspiration, as you helped so many social work students (including myself) learn the history and values of our profession. I will always remember your humor, dedication to your students, and passion for social work. You truly were a pioneer in our field and I am thankful for having the opportunity to learn from your teaching and experience. My thoughts are with you and your family. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Go in peace, Dan. I remember first meeting you at the Boise State faculty summer camp in McCall when I was 17- with my brother Del, now gone on, and his wonderful wife, Carol. You inspired me then and the account of your life and love inspire me now.
