Dave Hawk Obituary

Dave Hawk Dave Hawk, of Boise, formerly of Vale, Ore. passed away at his home in Boise on Aug. 18, 2007 surrounded by family and friends. Dave was born on May 24, 1928 to Otis and Rose Etta (Renfro) Hawk at Neosho, Mo. He was five years old when his father passed away. At age nine, Dave with his mother and his older sister and her husband moved to the Fruitland, New Plymouth area where he attended school until midway through his junior year. He then went to Longview, Wash., where he graduated high school in 1946. After high school, he spent a short time in the Air Force. In 1948, he continued his education at the College of Idaho where he played basketball and baseball, graduating in 1951. Dave's first teaching and coaching job was at Dayville, Ore. He was there for one year then moved to Siletz, Ore. coaching and teaching there for three years. Dave came to Vale, Ore. in 1955 where he was the head basketball coach until 1980. He continued to teach until 1986 when he retired. Still not tired of teaching, Dave substitute taught until 2001 when he was recognized by the State of Oregon for 50 years of service. Dave met his wife of 57 years, Dona Peterson while growing up in the Fruitland area. She was the younger sister of his life long friends Elmer and Jack Peterson. They were married August 20,1950 and raised five boys in Vale. Dave loved teaching, coaching, and hunting. Vale was a great place for all three. He always appreciated that the local farmers and ranchers would provide he and his five boys places to hunt where he taught them the lessons of life. Dave and Dona spent the last several years in Boise enjoying watching their grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, taking them fishing and camping, and helping them to grow up. Dave will be missed by many friends and family. God bless and God speed. Dave was the youngest of seven children. He was preceded in death his mother, father, two brothers, and four sisters. He is survived by his wife Dona Hawk; sons and daughter-in-laws, Dave and Carolyn Hawk, Stacy Hawk, Craig and Dana Hawk, Tom and Margaret Hawk, Brian Hawk, and former daughter-in-law Diane (Bement) Mather; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation and reception will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. at Summers Funeral Home, 1205 W. Bannock Street, Boise. Graveside services will be held Thursday, August 23,2007 at 1 p.m. at Salubria Cemetery in Cambridge, Idaho. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, Aug. 24, 2007 at 7 p.m. at Vale High School, Vale, Ore. Arrangements are by Summers Funeral Home, Boise Chapel. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Mr. Hawk was one of my favorite teachers at VHS. I remember him whistling answers to test questions and thumping me on the head with a pencil when he walked by during a test and noticed I had the question wrong. Although I had him as a teacher toward the end of his teaching career (class of '81) he was still passionate about teaching. He made learning enjoyable.
