Diane Masterson

Boise, Idaho - Diane Masterson entered into Christ's rest on May 30, 2025 after a short battle with cancer. She was a luminous and gracious soul with a delightful smile. Her passing is a loss for all who knew her.

Diane was born in Minnesota on October 18, 1933, the firstborn child of Alton and Eleanor Wahlin. She adored her younger brothers Ron and Perry. After high school, Diane received a scholarship to attend nursing school. Upon graduating with her RN, she accepted an offer to work in Denver, and there she met the love of her life, Donald "Jack" Masterson. They married on August 10, 1957 and were devoted to one another for sixty- eight years. Their four children Jay (who is lovingly remembered), Dana, Bret, and Steve were blessed to have her as a mother. Each holds dear memories of cross-country adventures in a Volkswagen van, camping in the wilderness, and themed birthday parties.

Diane exuded grace and kindness, always making everyone feel welcome, she had a servant's heart. Family and friends speak fondly of times spent with her and how she was always interested in their lives, remembering every detail she was told. Her handwritten cards and letters to family and friends are legendary. She made homemaking an art, and her home was filled with collectibles, art and plants that she cared for tenderly in her beloved sunroom. A delivery man once told her when he came to the door that their house looked like a place where you could get an apple pie. He was so right!

Diane was a devout woman who lived her faith in a quiet, dignified way. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church for 57 years and enjoyed being a Sunday school teacher, Altar Guild member and supplying treats for the 8 o'clock service. She was a dedicated volunteer and treasured her time with her PEO sisterhood and The Assistance League. Jack and Diane took great pride in their deep commitment to the Boise community. They were active and cherished participants in a wide range of local organizations, such as the Idaho Botanical Gardens, Boise Art Museum, and NAMI. As early supporters of both the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Bronco Nation, they held season tickets for over five decades. Diane loved getting ready for BSU games with her lucky Blue and Orange beads, Bronco outerwear, and festive hats. She was still driving to the games in her late eighties.

Diane and Jack enjoyed many wonderful trips overseas, and domestically in their trailer, often traveling with family members and friends and even got to attend the Olympics twice. At the age of sixty-six, she and Jack hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up…

Diane embodied childlike wonder and had an open, uncritical spirit. She loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Like her favorite keepsakes, she was an angel; we were blessed to know her. She will be missed by all.

Diane will be reunited with her beloved son, Jay (Tanya); brother Perry Wahlin (Marlys); and her parents Eleanor and Alton. She is survived by her adoring husband of 68 years, Donald Earl "Jack" Masterson Jr.; brother Ron Wahlin (Amy); sister-in-law Donna Harlan (Rod); daughter, Dana Morfin; sons Bret (Francesca) and Steven; as well as grandchildren Nicholas Waters (Molly), Abby Baker (Josh), Quinn, Harris, Thomas and Laynie Masterson, Jason and Tara Knudsen; as well as great-grandchildren Jonathan and Amos Waters, Aspen and Wren Baker, and Sierra Maddocks (Tristan); and great-great grandson Kelly Maddocks along with an adoring group of nieces and nephews.

The Masterson family would like to thank St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center for their outstanding care and compassion during this difficult time.

A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on Sunday, July 6 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for contributions to The ALS Association (www.als.org) or NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI.org" target="_new" rel="nofollow">www.NAMI.org).
