Dolores Hegstrom Obituary

Dolores "Dee" (Schwarz) Hegstrom
1916 - 2013
Dolores "Dee" (Schwarz) Hegstrom, 96, of Boise, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2013.
The daughter of Dr. Peter and Rose Ann Schwarz, Dee was born in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho on September 6, 1916.
Dee attended school in Pocatello and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Idaho State University. She began her teaching career in Lava Hot Springs, where she met her future husband, Bud Hegstrom. They were married in Pocatello on August 16, 1939. They moved to Sun Valley to run the pharmacy during WWII and opened their own drug store in Ketchum a few years later. Dee resumed teaching in Ketchum while helping Bud operate their store. She and Bud enjoyed hunting with Ernest and Mary Hemingway, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, selling fishing licenses to Bing Crosby and other notables, and forming many lifelong friendships.
Dee relocated to Boise with her husband and children and taught at Cole School until her retirement. Many Boiseans have benefited from her dedication and remarkable teaching talent and have enjoyed her annual 3rd grade field trips up the street to visit the Hegstrom livestock menagerie at her home. Dee was devoted to her Catholic faith and taught religious education to children at her Ketchum parish. She enjoyed outdoor sports and supported the Ada County Sheriff's Posse and EHCAPA Bareback Riders. She was a lifelong member of Delta Kappa Gamma as well as the Retired Teachers (Boise & Idaho), St. Al's Auxiliary, Ketchum/Hailey Altar Society, St. Mark's Altar Society and Cole School PTA. Family and friends will always remember her for the warm welcome they received at her home, accompanied by the world's best homemade chicken noodle soup and cherry pie.
Dee is survived by her daughters Ann Hegstrom and Mary Lynn Gloth and husband Steve of Boise and grandchildren Nicholas of Star and Chelsea of St. Louis, Mo.
A viewing will be held Thursday, June 27, 2013, from 3-5 p.m. at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise. A vigil prayer service will be held Thursday, June 27, 2013, at 7 p.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Boise. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's. A luncheon at the church will follow the service, prior to burial at Dry Creek Cemetery, Boise.
Friends and loved ones are invited to make donations to the charity of their choice.
