Edward Ludwig Obituary

Edward Glen Ludwig, 77, Fruitvale, Idaho, passed away peacefully November 8, 2009 at home of natural causes. Ed was born March 30, 1932 in Council, Idaho to Harry and Myrtle Ludwig, and was raised on a farm in Indian Valley, Idaho along with his 6 siblings. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1950. Ed was drafted out of High School by the Cardinal baseball program. He played ball for the organization until going into the Army, where he played ball at Fort Ord and served in Korea. After getting out of the service, he resumed his baseball career. In 1956 he married Vera DeStefanis. In 1957 he left baseball and moved back to Council. They owned and operated the Starlite Motel and Wayside Grocery, along with having four children. They later divorced but remained good friends. He moved his grocery store downtown and renamed it The Council Valley Market, until unofficially retiring in 1997. Ed still made a point of working a few hours a day, several days a week, up to this last month. During this time he married Lorraine Selby. They lived in Council and Fruitvale, where he farmed for over 20 years, until later divorcing. Ed was a great father, grandfather, bowler, golfer, hunter, fisherman, and storyteller. He loved watching sports, but the past years his garden, flowers, canning, and wine making have been his favorite hobbies. He loved getting together with family for Holidays and picnics. Gardening was always a passion, and he was a natural at growing fruit & vegetables. He put a new home on his Fruitvale property (to be closer to his garden) and lived there with his companion Delpha Hutchison until his passing. He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Vern and Teresa Ludwig of Fruitvale, Id., Vic and Jody Ludwig of Council, Id., Tim and Maria Horn of Meridian, Id., and Pat and Melissa DeHaas of Council, Id. Many grandchildren, great grandchildren; his brother, Jim Ludwig of Elgin, OR., and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside Services will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 1:00 PM at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Council under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life gathering will follow at the Council Legion Hall for all friends and family.
