Ethel Leiterman Obituary

8/20/1909 - 2/27/2007 Ethel was born in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Aug. 20, 1909. Her family lived in Utah for a short time, and moved to Los Angeles, Calif. in 1919. At the age of 15 she met a stunt pilot named Frank Leiterman, and became interested in flying, obtaining her license in 1924. They were married June 16, 1928 in Los Angeles and over the years were blessed with four children. Following the death of Frank, in April 1982 she moved to Boise, Idaho to join her two daughters and grandchildren. She joined two walking groups, the Happy Hoofers and the Ecumaniacs, where she quickly made many friends. She was a loyal member of the American Legion Auxillary, and the 8 and 40 organization. From 1984 through 2002 she volunteered at the Idaho Veterans Home, and enjoyed taking veterans for outings by pushing their wheelchairs, helping with weekly Pinochle games and sewing projects, and serving refreshments. From 1982 until 2003 she participated in the Boise Holiday Parade, driving her 1954 Pontiac Station Wagon. In 2003 she joined the Red Hat Ladies, and very much enjoyed their meetings and activities. She is survived by her family of two sons: Carl Leiterman and his wife Lucille, and Richard Leiterman and his wife Darlene; and two daughters, Jo Toomey and Marie Endecott and her husband Steve. Her grandchildren include James and Tina Leiterman, Timothy and Edith Leiterman, Robert and Regina Leiterman, Thomas and Tracie Leiterman, Donald Leiterman and Rodney Leiterman, Stephanie and Mark Raper, Greg Toomey and Laurie Quigley, Michael Furniss [deceased], Mark and Sara Furniss, Erik and Haley Endecott, Ryan Endecott; and 33 great-grandchildren. A Vigil Service will be held Thursday, March 1, at 7 p.m. at St. Mary´s Catholic Church in Boise. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held Friday, March 2, at St. Mary´s Catholic Church, at 11 a.m., under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated next week at St. Lawrence Parish in Los Angeles, Calif. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Idaho State Veterans Home or your local Police Force.

As a kid my Grandmother was the best Grandmother ever! Okay, okay, the only Grandmother I knew. But as a kid she was the best. Every year like clockwork just in time for my Birthday. Kerching! A birthday letter addressed to Master Jimmy Leiterman would arrive. Even into my late teens, KerChing. WOW, $2. And they kept coming up to my last birthday, although the thrill of the KerChing was displaced with the thrill of someone remembering my birthday.

As a kid I was astonished at how many Christmas letters she had. They went all the way around the room, hung from the ceiling, year after year. I surmised that she merely recycled them year after year. Boy was I wrong! I much later realized that she actually knew at least that many people who actually sent Christmas cards. WOW!

As an adult I too became one of those senders of Christmas cards only with an attached newspaper sized annual Christmas letter. Well with a family of eight kids a simple Merry Christmas is never enough. But Grandma always cheerfully thanked me for the news. But I digress.

I frequently heard of her travels, as she seemed to get around a lot. For now, there’s no need for a car, boat, plane, or train, as she’s now soaring in the heavens; yet another stop in her travels.

Mom was an incredible woman, enduring all the pains in life, both physical and emotional. She dearly loved the little ones, whether they were her own or not. She touched everyone with such compassion and love. Mom loved to be active. She enjoyed being with the residents of the Veterans Home, giving them the attention that they so dearly deserve. Mom always wanted to be with the family, and enjoyed being with friends, and traveling. She did her best in being active with the American Legion Auxiliary and made many friends.
I love you and miss you mom.

Ethel was one of the happiest, most pleasant people I have ever been fortunate enough to know. She always had nice things to say about everyone, and I am lucky to have had the chance to get to know her. Heaven has gained another angel, and she will be missed dearly by many.

When my grandmother used to come for visits and stayed for long periods of time, I enjoyed every moment of our time together. I will surely miss her cinnamon rolls, you just couldn’t put them down, they were so addicting. I haven’t seen her for a while now; my schedule had become so busy. I just didn’t have time. I was surely looking forward to her visit in April this year. I will miss her deeply. I know that she is free from any pain and discomfort now and that she is off to join with Grandpa. May her journey be a pleasant one. She will be greatly missed. I love you grandma.
