Gary Donald Cieslak M.D.

Gary Cieslak Obituary

Gary Donald Cieslak, M.D. Gary Donald Cieslak, M.D., age 50, passed away on Jan. 30, 2009, of cancer. Gary was born Feb. 10, 1958 in Binghamton, N.Y., and spent his childhood in the village of Pittsford in upstate New York. His family moved to Dallas, where Gary graduated from Jesuit College Preparatory High School in 1976 and earned a full scholarship to the University of Dallas. There, he was named valedictorian of his class in 1980. After being awarded his M.D. from University of Texas Medical Branch in 1985, Gary completed his pediatric residency at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, an anesthesia residency at Parkland Hospital, and a Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle. He was certified by both the American Board of Pediatrics and American Board of Anesthesiology. With his wife Mitzi and four children, Gary eventually settled in 1996 in Boise, Idaho, where he served as staff anesthesiologist for St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. However, Gary's distinguished academic and professional accomplishments only tell a small part of the rich story of his life. He viewed such achievements as simply the means to fulfilling a larger, more worthy purpose, as his deep personal faith informed and guided all of his aspirations and relationships. He led first by example an extraordinary life of philanthropy, selflessness, sacrifice, and compassion. Gary dedicated his life to the service of others, not only through the practice of medicine, but through his volunteer work. Most recently he served as physician with Project Haiti, traveling with a team of doctors and clergy to Milot and Port-au-Prince. Closest to Gary's heart was spending time with his wife and family, yet he also maintained close friendships with many of his University of Dallas classmates. He enjoyed playing hockey with a local men's league. He was well-known for his contemplative nature, his warmth, his humility, his humor and clever wordplay, and he was often sought out for his insight and wisdom. Gary passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by Mitzi and the children, his father, and his siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mitzi; his children Jessica, Michael, Joseph, and Andy; his father Donald E. Cieslak of West Hills, Calif.; his siblings David, also of West Hills, Brian, of Riverside, Calif., Kimberly Salzer of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Amy Engelmann, of Boise. Funeral mass to be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Boise, Idaho on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. Arrangements under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel. In lieu of flowers, people may donate contributions in his name to: Project Haiti, c/o Debbie Hamilton, Saint Alphonsus Foundation, 1055 N. Curtis Rd, Boise, Idaho 83706, or St. Luke's Children's Health Foundation, c/o Jeff Cilek, St. Luke's Children Hospital, 190 E. Bannock, Boise, ID 83712.

To the Cieslak family, our heartfelt sympathy. You see, we too lost a husband and father recently to Gary's type of illness. Our son attended BK with Joe and they played hockey together . My husband Mark was also in the men's hockey league at Ice World. I'll never forget Gary's caring bedside manner to me and my husband just one year ago when Mark had his third brain surgery and Gary was his anesthesiologist. He even came up to his hospital room to check on him later. That meant a lot to my husband. God Bless you all

I remember Gary as always being so intelletual and so open to answering any anesthesia question. He was so wonderful to work with. He was willing to give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. He will be greatly missed.

Cieslaks,
Quite a few Jebbies signing this book, all saying how long it had been since they had actually talked to Gary but all saying what a great guy they remember him being. This is a wonderful tribute to him, the fact that after 30 years we all remember him as a smart, funny and kind soul. We applaud his life and are so sorry for your loss.

I remember Gary fondly since our days at Jesuit. He truly was one of the great ones from the class of 1976. I offer a prayer of support and condolence for his family and look forward until we reunite with Gary in Heaven with life everlasting. God Bless you Gary for all you have done, and may God Bless and watch over your Family in the years to come.

Mitzi and Family,
The first time I saw Gary's brilliant smile was shortly after meeting him back in high school in Dallas. I remember thinking there was no way any teenager could fulfill the promise of genius and generosity of spirit conveyed in that smile. Gary did. Even as a teenager Gary dug deep and gave his best. It came as quite a relief and a calming sense of justice to learn that Gary's determination propelled him into a life of service as a physician and a volunteer to the benefit of so many others. God bless him. God bless you.

My memories of Gary are countless. We were in both College and Medical School together. His ability to shed light upon any subject and to infuse hope into any situation has given me much peace during my life. I will miss his wise counsel and his bigger-than-life smile. Valerie and I will keep his many loved-ones in our prayers.

While I have not seen Gary since our days at Jesuit, I was truly saddened by his passing. Somehow that does not seem so long ago. Gary was a friend to many, very compassionate, intelligent, and always with a smile on his face. I am sure he leaves these same traits with his wife and children. Best of luck & God Bless

Mitzi,

Our families (The Albosta's) were good friends in New York when Gary and I were kids. We reconnected during his "UD" days when Gary's family moved to California. What a wonderful person and always such a gentleman. Too soon for him to go. Our best to your family so sorry for your loss.

Mitzi & FamilY:
The Albosta's are long time family friends of the Cielslaks going back to Gary's birth in Binghamton in 1958. We have many fond rememberances of Gary, especially his struggles through "med school". We're so so sad at his premature death. Unbelieveable. Our family's thoughts and prayers are with you and family at this difficult time.

We will make a rememberance donation to St. Lukes in Gary's name.

I wish to express my sincerest sympathy to Gary's family. I have fond memories of the time I spent with Gary and his family while I was growing up in the Rochester area. I spent a number of holidays with them as well as spending the night with them a few times. I recall one house that my aunt and uncle lived in was close to a field with wild strawberries which we had great fun picking on a warm summer day.
The last time I saw Gary was when I was living in Chicago during the summer of 1984. Gary was working at a Chicago hospital (I can't remember which one) and came to spend the day with Janine (my wife) and myself. I was so impressed with how hard Gary had worked to get through medical school.
Gary usually sent a Christmas card to me and my family with a letter to explain how he and his family were doing. I will miss these letters. I will always cherish all of these fond memories. I was not surprised to read that Gary had donated time to helping people in Haiti because Gary was one of the kindest people I had ever met.
