Gary Ferguson Obituary

Gary L. Ferguson 1940 ~ 2012 After a brief illness, Gary passed away on April 18, 2012 at the age of 71 in Sun City West, AZ. Gary Lee Ferguson was the second child born to Al and Lucille Ferguson on November 9, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1948, the family moved to "the farm" in Charlestown, IN, where his father built their home with concrete blocks. Gary liked to share with others that they did not have running water or electricity. He was extremely proud of his early childhood. Due to his father's profession, he touted that one year he moved to 6 different schools. We think this is why Gary was a friend to everyone. He ultimately landed in Jeffersonville, IN, where he graduated in 1958 from Jeffersonville High School. Gary served in the US Navy for a short time prior to serving in the US Air Force from 1958-1966 (stationed in France and the Philippines). He married Sara Jessie Bauman in 1964 and they had two daughters, Leann and Leasa. Gary and Sara later divorced in 1975. Gary worked briefly for IBM and then started work for Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 1969. Gary was one of the first 15 people from California who transferred here to help start up the Boise Division of Hewlett-Packard Company. Gary worked for HP for 30 years at various locations and in different positions but he always loved the company and the employees that he mentored. He retired in 2000. During his employment at HP in Boise, he met Karen Gossi and they married on April 7, 1979. They were soul mates from the first time they met. They both had a love for travel and adventure. Over their more than 33 years together, they experienced living in Singapore, riding elephants in Thailand, walking on the Great Wall of China, scuba diving in Hawaii, riding a helicopter over the Grand Canyon, surviving a category 5 cyclone while in Cairns, Australia, and seeing 4 of the big 5 in Africa, to name a few. Gary had one last continent that he wanted to visit, Antarctica, then his tour around the world would have been complete. But Gary's true love was the Idaho outdoors, where he could fish, enjoy nature, take photos and play the game of golf. Gary loved his role as a father, grandfather and uncle. It was important to him to make a difference to his family and others. He was a true friend to many, he always offered to fix or build things for anyone and everyone. His greatest joy was to help others. If Gary couldn't fix it then it definitely could not be fixed. He truly was talented with his woodworking skills, which he acquired after he retired. He left his legacy and gift of woodworking in people's homes, through the jewelry boxes he made, the special projects that he helped with and the furniture that he created. Gary's wonderful smile, gorgeous blue eyes, funny stories and hugs will be greatly missed. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Albert; mother, Lucille; and brother, David. He is survived by his wife, Karen Ferguson of Star, ID; his daughters, Leann Day (Bob), Leasa Stricklin (Phil) and his three grandchildren Ashley and Kyle Day and Jessie Stricklin all of Meridian, ID. His sister, Lynda Carpenter (David) of San Antonio, TX; his niece Carole Kane (Joe) of San Antonio, TX; nephew David Carpenter (Cindy) of Corona, CA and brother-in-law Joseph Smith of San Antonio, TX. Also surviving Gary is his brother-in-law Dan Gossi and his family Dick and Angie Anderson and John Gossi; his sister-in-law Kay Anderson and her family, SSG Mitch and Aja Anderson, Virginia Anderson and Gunnar Hardy and his other sister-in-law Krista Tuckness (Rick) and her family, Sarah and Erik Hans, Nathan and Sarah Tuckness, Joshua, Rebekeh and Hannah Tuckness; his father-in-law Tom Gossi (Donna) and step father-in-law Doug Thimsen. He is also survived by his beloved cousins Rocky, Stacey, Shelley, and numerous great nieces and nephews. A celebration of Gary's life will be held on Saturday, May 5, 3:00 p.m., at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Nativity, 828 W. Cherry Lane (across from Meridian Middle School). In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity, Assistance League of Boise, or Boise State University ISRC Shirley Gossi Thimsen Memorial Scholarship (HS077). Arrangements are under the direction of Summers Funeral Home, Boise Chapel.

Memories and Condolences
for Gary Ferguson

Not sure what to say?

I was saddened to hear of Gary's passing. My condolences to the entire family. My fondest memory of Gary was when we first met in 1971. Gary was the support engineer for the disk division when a customer in Vancouver B C had intermittent disk problems. Many attempts to solve the problem were unsuccessful. Gary asked for a volunteer who had some computer and disk training to meet him in Vancouver with parts. This was over a four day Fourth of July weekend. So even though I had no disk training I volunteered.

The next morning, Saturday, we went to the customer site. We were an amazing team and isolated the problem to a teletype I/O card causing intermittent interrupts to the disk drive. We solved the problem in about 1 1/2 hours. We did enjoy visiting the sites of Vancouver waiting for our return flight on Tuesday.

At that time the disk division policy was not to accept any warranty repair billing unless the CE had completed disk training, I was the only exception. Our paths crossed many times after that at HP. Gary even tried to convince me to move Boise. After seeing his beatiful home on the golf course I was very tempted.

He will be missed.

Karen, I didn't hear about Gary's death until this weekend. You are in my thoughts. Although I only worked for Gary for a brief period of time, I worked with him on and off for many years. I loved his wry sense of humor and his commitment to always "do the right thing" for customers and his employees.

My condolences to Karen and the entire Ferguson family. I worked for Gary for a number of years in the early 1980's and we got a chance to talk and catch-up last year when we crossed paths at Barnes & Noble in Boise. Gary was a great story teller and even 30 years later I remember and think about stores he told me the early 80's. I am sorry for your loss.

Karen- Gary was one of the most positive and funny people I had the opportunity to work with at HP. Over the many years we worked together I learned to respect his insights and the infectious way he communicated. He is truly missed and one special guy! My prayers are with you.

I loved Gary's stories. They were historical and inspirational. Gary always had a "we can do it" attitude. He had a wry smile - which made me feel that he was letting me in on important secrets.

Karen and family,

It is with heavy heart that I read the Obit of Gary. My condolences to you and the family. Gary was always the friendly face and wonderful laugh that helped the stress of work melt away. While I won't be physically able to be in Boise on the 5th., I will be there in spirit. All the best to you and yours,

I don't opften sign guest books but Gary was one of those HP leaders that always made a good impression and set the standard for others to follow. I met Gary in the late 70's and then many times throughout the 80's. I first met Gary when I was a CE and then had the pleasure of working with him when I was a manager. I always enjoyed working with him and had nothing but the greatest respect for him.

My condolences to his family and my life and career was better for having the privilege of working with him.

Sincerely,
Jeff Landre

I first met Gary when I was interviewing for an internal position in Technical Marketing, moving from SWQA. Gary was a peer of my eventual hiring manager in Tech Marketing, and we got talking about ice cream. I had owned a Swensen's Ice Cream Parlour in San Diego, and Gary just wanted to talk about ice cream -- it sure made the interview go by smoothly! He was a great person to know at HP, and even seeing him a few times after his retirement. A true gentleman - his passing leaves a void. My condolences to the family on this loss.

Dear Karen,
Alice told me about Gary's passing and I was a bit stilled over his death. I have such fond memories of both of you and his obituary tells the story of a wonderful life shared. Please accept my condolences from across the miles. You were separated far too soon.

Dear Karin,

I was always pleased to be friends to both Gary and you. I remember my first trip to Japan for HP in the 80's - with Gary helping with my first international trip. I fondly remember the sight of Gary trying to fit on Japanese floor mats when we stayed in a traditional Japanese hotel during that trip.

Gary was a great friend and an excellent HP employee. I am so saddened to hear of his passing.

Karen, I was saddened to get this news. Gary was a great guy and I will always remember our trip to Brazil. Great stories...he probably took a lot of secrets with him, and he didn't die in a parachute accident! That's the way I'll remember him, along with telling us that ICE CREAM CONES WAS NOT THE WAY TO SELL DISC DRIVES.
Very best regards to you and your family.
