Gerald Nelson Obituary

Gerald David "Dave" Nelson passed away on March 18, 2010 at his home in Mackay, Idaho after battling cancer for six years. Dave was born July 3, 1941 in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada to Mariam Kilpatrick and Gerald Dixon Nelson. He attended schools in Black Pines and Kamloops, B.C. His early years were spent logging and ranching in the Kamloops area with his father. On July 9, 1960, he married Heather Grant in Kamloops. It was here that they made their home and started raising their three children. Dave worked as the manager for a cattle and sheep ranch. In 1965 he moved his family to California and later became a U.S. citizen in 1986. He and his father co-managed San Felipe Ranch which was owned by Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett, founders of Hewlett-Packard. In 1973 Dave moved to Idaho to manage ranches purchased by Packard and Hewlett in Idaho and Montana. He retired in 1998 after working for San Felipe Ranch for 33 years. Dave continued his ranching tradition, managing Nelson Ranches from 1990 until his death. Passionate about the ranching, Dave held many positions on County, State, and National Cattle Associations as well as on other committees and organizations. Dave served as President of the Idaho Cattle Association in 2002 and President of the national Public Lands Council in 2006. Dave had a great love of agriculture, investing much time and energy as a steward for the industry. His endless devotion to family will be a lasting legacy of compassion and integrity for countless generations. His no-nonsense, common sense approach to life has provided a priceless example to his family and a foundation for their own success. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, boating snowmobiling, family events and traveling. Dave was a member of the Idaho Cattle Association, National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Public Lands Council, Idaho Fish & Game Advisory Committee, Custer County Fair Board, Mackay Lions Club, and Society for Range Management. Dave was inducted into the Eastern Idaho Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1999. He is survived by his wife, Heather; children, Holly (Bill) Seefried and Randy (Shauna) Nelson both of Mackay; daughter in law Barbara (Mark) Needs of Sand Hollow, Idaho; siblings Sheila Murray of Vernon, B.C., Bonnie (Bill) Costello of Boise, Idaho; and Chris (Barbara) Nelson of Le Grand, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and almost nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald David "Gerry", his parents and one sister Marilyn Wright. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at the Mackay High School with VerNon Roche officiating. A graveside service will follow at the Mt. McCaleb Cemetary in Mackay. The family will meet with friends and family at a celebratory luncheon following the graveside service at the Mackay High School. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lost River Funeral Home, 345 Sunset Dr. Arco, Idaho. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Nelson Memorial Scholarship, c/o Ireland Bank, PO Box 600, Mackay, Idaho 83251.

I would like to thank all of you for your kind words about my Gramps. I'm going to miss him very much, but it's comforting to read what he has meant to all of you.

I hayed and fed and farmed and ranched with Dave Nelson seven years and never knew a man like him in all my life; I'll never forget the support he could give the crew, he did everything, 24/7.
Despite all that like all the others we all know he could not get by this one.
The world and the Lost River Valley should never forget the kind of man Dave Nelson was. We will miss him but remember him forever.
Thanks. David E. Gabert

DAVE, AS A FRIEND, As An Employer, As An Official Representing Our Agricultural Industry, Various Associations, Boards, And Committees, Found Himself In The Same Shoes We Are Wearing Today, Searching For...”Just The Right Thing To Say”...To A Family That Have Lost...”A Very Special, Significant, Loved One”

WHAT EVER HE SAID To That Family Was From Dave’s Heart, Sincere, Meaningful, And Direct. We Pray That We Are Able To Convey To His Family Our Condolences For Their Loss, While At The Same Time Express Our Gratitude For Sharing Him With Us And Our Industry In The Form Of His Friendship, And His Well Documented, Unselfish, Effective, Dedicated Leadership.

“OUR INDUSTRY LOSES A LEGEND” Was The Subject Of The E-Mail We Received Mid-Afternoon On Thursday March 18th. Announcing Dave’s Passing. Resisting The Impulse To Call Brother Chris, Realizing He Was In The Process Of Dealing With The Details, We Started Searching The Internet And At The Same Time We Thought About Our History With Dave And His Family By Recalling Some Of The Mutual Experiences We Shared Over The Past Forty (40) Years - Almost To The Day.

THE OBITUARY That Appeared In Sunday Morning’s Idaho Statesman Was A Timely Gift To Us All. Our First Impression Was That Whoever...Composed The Obituary...Was Very Well Acquainted With Dave. They Encapsulated Almost Every Trait That Was On Our List In Addition To Dave’s Genealogical Family Tree, And A Photo, That Despite The Circumstance, Helped Us To Feel A Little Better.

“FIRM, BUT FAIR” Dave “Never Promised More Than He Could Deliver”. In Keeping With The Tradition Established By Dave And Chris’s Father, Gerry, The Last Livestock Transaction We Made Was On A Handshake And The Cattle Were Delivered Three States Away Exactly The Way Dave Said They Would Be.

“THE-CODE-OF-THE-WEST” Could Easily Have Been Dave’s Agenda For Conducting His Life. He Always: Lived Each Day With Courage, Took Pride In His Work, Always Tried To Finish What He Started, Did What Had To Be Done, Was Tough But Fair, When He Made A Promise He Kept It, He Rode For The Brand, He Talked Less But Said More, Remembered That Some Things Were Never For Sale, Knew Where To Draw The Line.

Dear Heather, I'm so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I always appreciated my association with him. Especially when he facilitated a meeting between me and my cousin Joe Hammond. That was special. May God bless you.

My father worked for Dave for 10 years. Dave and his family were wonderful and very generous when I lost both my father and mother. A truly remarkable and generous man who has instilled that great quaility in his family that survives him. My prays goes out to the family. Dave will be greatly missed...*Kim Pearce, Idaho Falls

Condolences to the family. I knew Dave from ICA and enjoyed the times I spent with him. His humor, great stories and common sense were some of the great things I remember about Dave. We traveled together on a "tour" of I daho county associations when he was president of the association and formed a friendship over the many miles. I havent seen him for years but have thought of him often.
