What can anyone say about John and not have a big smile. I knew John as a young woman in Santa Monica. We were both young and became good friends and seemed to manage to stay out of trouble but do some very mischevious things. John was about 6 years older than I, we both drank and partied though John had several bouts of sobriety. I think I could probably write a book about things we did together. He finally left Santa Monica around 1972 or 73. I left in 1974 to return to my hometown of Needles, CA. Many years later while looking up old friends on Google, I found John, now a bigshot in addiction and I called him at Southworth Assoc. We had a grand time talking about old times and the success he had achieved in addiction counseling. I was so sorry to find out he had passed. John truly touched many lives and none of us will be the same because of it. RIP friend John.

As a very old friend of John's I am so happy to read about what a good force for fighting addiction he had become. Though I knew him at a different time and place, he was an amazing person to know and am better off for knowing him.

I will always remember you as a man of great ethics and values. Your life's mission was so worthy and the world is certainly lucky and blessed to have folks here that can carry on the legacy which you so generously passed down. I appreciated your concern about a TV series dedicated to addiction, intervention and recovery... especially in my business! But I really appreciated your change of heart when you recognized our mission and our ethics behind that mission.
Rest Easy. You deserve it.
With Much Admiration and Love,
Sam

I often asked myself what motivated John to go out of his way to help me like he did. I did nothing to earn that from him and yet he persisted. I came to realize that this is who he was at his core. The world lost a great man and the addiction field lost one of its great ambassadors. He will live on through all the avenues of outreach he helped build and to honor him, I will go out of my way to pay it forward unsolicited more often. Love ya, John. May we all leave this earth with some semblance of the success you had in making a difference in others' lives.

To my brother, John:
You were the first guest on my first show on KIDO. I still remember your drollery and dry humor. No doubt, many others do, too.
We became very good friends while I was in Boise; that friendship carried for over 30 years. It's hard for me to think that I can't just pick up the phone, come visit, or you come visit me (as you did several times since I've een overseas). Or, talk about politics with you!
My world will be less fun and not as rich, without you, John.
I've been checking the Idaho Statesman ever since you called me last week and told me what was up with you. I've tried to call you several in the interim. Every day I checked the Idaho paper, I softly mouthed the words, "please John, don't be in the obits today, buddy". Well, today, my heart skipped a beat when I saw your face. I will miss you immensely. Beyond that, I feel sorry for all those suffering addicts and alcoholics that will not hear your words and feel your love.
Goodbye old friend,
Tom Alibrandi

Rest In Peace my friend!

My Dead Friend, Colleague and mentor. I can not thank you enough for everything you have taught me. Your life touched mine in profound ways. You did everything with honor and integrity you were larger than life but never acted differently to anyone No matter what Walk of life they came from everyone to you was worth time and compassion. The time we spent will never be forgotten. I will always cherish you going with me to my first intervention, I remember even though the boy said no you never gave up you showed So much determination, caring and love for somebody who didn't even know. That young boy has now a real shot at life because you did not give up on him. He has picked up his two years all because someone didn't give up on him... It was inspirational.
With love always
