Matthew Hicks Obituary

Matthew Michael Hicks
January 31, 1970 - April 18, 2022
Boise, Idaho - Matthew Michael Hicks, an accomplished local attorney, passed away on April 18 at his home in Boise. He was 52. Among Matt's wonderful qualities were his great sense of humor and sharp wit; passion for music; and abounding love for his friends and family.
Matt was born in Santa Monica, California, on January 31, 1970. He grew up in cities across the U.S. as his family moved in support of his father's career at IBM. As a teenager in Denver, Matt made a lifelong friend in Brian Hull. They shared a love of music, and explored and climbed the natural and built environment. When Matt's family moved to Connecticut, his musical journey continued, and he immersed himself in the energetic New York punk scene of the 1980s.
Matt attended Baylor University, where he met his future wife Laura Lindsey. He later attended Notre Dame Law School, and he and Laura were married in 1995 in the campus basilica. After law school, Matt and Laura moved to Boise, where he worked as a law clerk and at various offices, before securing a position at Holland and Hart, and eventually worked his way up to Partner. In 2018 he accepted a Senior Counsel position at Albertsons. Matt's colleagues remember his love for an argument, tenacity, and relish for victory over his opponents.
In 2001, Matt and Laura welcomed a son, Gavin, and in 2005, celebrated the arrival of a daughter, Genevieve. In 2010, Matt and Laura decided to part ways. Committed to rebuilding his life, Matt developed even closer relationships with his children and fostered their growth and education. Over the past two years, Matt formed a solid partnership with Susan Bradley, a remarkable woman whose calm and peaceful nature was a foil for Matt's fiery spirit.
Matt also formed unshakable bonds with many friends that shared his love of Notre Dame, sports, and live music. Matt gave back to the music community he loved. He served on the board of Radio Boise, helped found the Boise All-Ages Movement Project, and provided pro bono legal support to the Treefort Music Festival.
Matt leaves behind his son and daughter Gavin and Genevieve, their mother, Laura Lindsey Omstead; his parents, Jeannie and Richard Hicks; his sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Scott Grantham; his partner, Susan Bradley; and a large extended family and circle of friends. Matt's memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 21 at 11:00 am, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 807 N 8th St., Boise.

To the Hicks family: I am very sorry to hear of Matt's passing. I got to know him when he was an intern at our IBM office in the Chicagoland area. He was a sweet young man with a dry wit and very dedicated. We had many conversations about music and his love of punk. May God comfort you all as you grieve.
