Pamela Link Obituary

Pamela Jean Link Singing to the tune of "We're having lots of fun at Camp Crescendo, and we want to come back next year!" Pamela Jean Link succumbed to ovarian cancer on March 29, 2009. She was born in the kitchen of her family home in Pierce, Neb., on July 23, 1946, the fourth child of Ray and Barbara Seabury Link. She rode to kindergarten in a horse and buggy or sleigh while attending a one-room country school in Plainview, Neb. She graduated from Caldwell High School in 1964 and completed Boise State College in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a minor in music. Pamela was married in December of 1966 and became the proud and devoted mother of Marshall, Ashley and Benji Simmonds. Her children were the joy of her existence, each being successful and each adding delightful spouses and adorable grandchildren to the family mix. She became the beloved "Grandma Go-Go" to them all. She had a 22-year-teaching career in Boise, six in elementary classrooms and 16 as a music specialist. Her children's programs were dazzling and innovative and she shared her love of music with thousands of Boise school children. In 1990 she created a unique residential summer music camp for children. Camp Crescendo was held in McCall, Idaho for 15 years, then moved to the campus of the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. In 2003 she expanded the camp to include a session each summer in Salem, Ore. For 19 years these camps, each with an annual theme, provided children, second through twelfth grades, with a broad spectrum of experiences in dance, theatrics, art, instrumental and vocal music. Campers and staff alike gained skills in leadership and cooperation. After only four days of intense instruction, the campers always put on a final performance that amazed the audience. Pamela always set the bar high and her students never failed to reach it. It would be impossible to note how many children were influenced by these camp experiences, as well as the number who found their passion for future teaching careers because of camp. Another of her loves was her involvement in the women's singing group "Sounds," in which she sang, as well as designed spectacular sets, for over 20 years. Her lifetime dream of living in Manhattan was realized in 1999 when Pamela took a sabbatical and moved to the Big Apple. She walked the circumference of the island, walked all 18 bridges, lectured at Julliard, worked for the NY Philharmonic, saw countless Broadway musicals and enjoyed everything New York City had to offer during that year. Not wanting to rush into anything, Pamela and Tony Binder were married in 2002 after a 20-year date. Their love and devotion for one another was evident to everyone. At that time, Tony's children, Traci and Bret, became a part of their blended family. Survivors include her husband, Tony Binder; her children Marshall (Tabatha) Simmonds, Ashley (Pete) Pearson and Benjamin (Michelle) Simmonds; grandchildren Aidan and Lily Simmonds, Maryn Pearson and Ella Simmonds; Tony's children, Traci Wright and Bret (Shannon) Binder, and grandchildren Sydney, Cassie, and Tannor Wright, Brevin, Presley and Ramsey Binder. She is also survived by her father, Ray Link, her brothers Chuck (Francie) Link, Greg (Sally) Link, and sister Kathie (Ron) Olson and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Dan Zuckerman, the wonderful staff at MSTI, and the supportive care from Life's Doors Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Boise Public Schools Education Foundation, Capital High School Choir, 8169 W. Victory Rd., Boise, ID 83709 or Caring Bridge, Donation Processing Center, PO box 131447, Houston, TX 77219-1447 or log onto CaringBridge to donate online. For her final production, join us on April 3, 2009 at 5 p.m. at the Doubletree Riverside, 2900 Chinden Blvd. Pamela's ashes will be scattered in the Bramble in Central Park, New York City at a later date. Dear Marshal, Ashley, Benji (and spouses), and Tony,
Everyday I spend some time reminiscing about Pam through the years. I feel so fortunate to have had Pam in my life since 5th grade in Caldwell. That same bubbly personality was part of our antics then and continued into our 60's!Gosh, I miss her! Thanks for sharing this article with me! Keep us all up to date on the family happenings through the future years.

I was a camper and Jr. Counselor at Camp Crescendo for 9 years. Pam was one of, if not the biggest, inspirations in my life. She taught me many things, not only about music, but life in general. The memories I hold from camp will be ones that last forever. I will miss her dearly and I know I will see her again someday. And to Pam's family: I feel for you and hope that you are okay. I love you all.
Thank you so much Pam for the legacy you have left on my life. You were like a mother to me and I will always remember and love you.

I am sorry i am writing so late.
My name is Lauren Spengler and she was my music teacher through elementary school, she taught me to love everything in my life. If it wasnt for her my life wouldnt have changed. She is the inspiration in my life and even though she is not walking the earth i still feel like she is with all of us, but instead i know that she is up in heaven telling everyone about her wonderful memories. She is directing the choir up in heaven and one day we are going to join that special choir with her. For Tony, Benji and family, i am so sorry for your loss. I love your wholle family!

Tony, Benji and family,
This is very late, as I was out of town and didn't have the newspaper at the time. I just found out about your loss and want to express my love and appreciation to all of you. Pam was such a remarkable lady, teacher, and musician. My children adored her! And Michael will NEVER forget the love and support that she and Tony gave to him after the fiasco at the festival at BYUI. Tony, you were so kind!
I just want you all to know what a wonderful woman she was and that her legacy lives on in so many! May God bless you and may you feel the strength of your family and friends during this adjustment. Benji, you are in my thoughts. Tony, may you have peace!

I am so sorry to hear of Pam's death. I met Pam in 1990 when she and Harriett Dean asked me to be a counselor at Camp Treble the very first year. I had just graduated from high school and didn't have a lot of confidence in my ability to teach children, but Pam and Harriett did. I was with them from 1990-1994 at Camp Treble as a counselor and loved every minute of it!

I am so appreciative of the kindness Pam always showed to me, as well as the faith and confidence she had in my talents and abilities.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family members.

My mom signed my name as she wrote her entry however I felt I needed to write something myself. All throughout elementary school, Pam was my music teacher. She was undoubtedly my motivation for music. She showed me how cool it could be and how awesome it was to learn music. Once I started camp as a counselor I realized that she had that same drive for kids that she had with me when I was in 1st grade. She was amazing in every way and she taught me a lot in my 12 years of school and I will greatly miss her.

Benji- we will get through this man, it's going to be hard and it will get harder. Just remember im going through this with you so if you ever need anything let me know.

I was so sorry to hear of Pam's death. She enriched the lives of so many with her talent and dedication and that smile!! She will be mightily missed.

Dear Tony, Traci, and Bret,
We were so sorry to hear of Pam's passing, she was a wonderful person and teacher. Justin, Andrew, and Keitra all had her as a music teacher at one point in time. We thought it was very sweet when we found out that Tony and Pam were dating and we'd see Pam come down to the tennis courts to see Tony. We are praying for you all.

I remember my first day ever being a camper at Camp Crescendo. I was a shy 5th grader wanting to go home when Pam came up to me. She said "I am so glad you came! I hope this will be a fun week for you." And it was. The rest of the week I made a bunch of new friends and learned the true power and spirit of music. I will always remember Pam and how she was so happy everytime I saw her at camp. She always had a smile on her face. Pam said that "Music kids are the best kids," and she knew that we could learn all those songs in one week. She had faith in all of those who she taught and she was a joy to us all. Pam influenced many people as we saw at the memorial and that was only a fraction of the people.I know that Pam will always be with me as I carry my music with me throughout my life. My prayers are with the family.

Pam was an incredible person with high hopes and a wonderful personality. I am pretty sure I have gone to Camp Crescendo for about four years and each year it was the best week of my life. I started to like loving music when I started going there and ever since I am hoping to grow up and do something in music, anything really. "Go make a difference, you can make a difference." Pam clearly made a difference in everyone's life including mine. "People who believe in music, are the happiest people that I've ever seen." And Pam was the happiest person I have seen. She wanted to put music in our hearts and she did that. She will be missed by loads, at the memorial was just a little amount of who she touched. She will be with us through the lyrics and notes of the music. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.

I am so sorry to hear about Pam. I remember learning so much from Pam each summer at Camp Treble (now Crescendo). For several years in a row, Camp Treble was a staple in my summer vacation, and some of my best memories belong to the world Pam helped create. There are still times I find myself saying "I remember when we learned that at Camp Treble..." My thoughts are with her family...

I was sorry to hear about Pam's passing. I knew her as Mrs. Simmonds - she was my first grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary forty years ago! She made quite an impression on me and I thought she was wonderful. She was also the first person to notice that I had a substantial hearing loss (much to my mother's chagrin). Serendipitously, I was hired to babysit for her and we didn't put two-and-two together as to the fact that she was my first grade teacher until she picked me up for babysitting. I'm thankful I had the chance to have her as a teacher - Blessings to her family at this time...

To Pam's family: I will always be grateful to Pam for the experience my daughter had at Camp Crescendo. It really opened our family's eyes up to music and what can be accomplished with passion. Now my daughter has mini Camp Crescendo's with all her cousins every time we have a family get together. There is always a performance in the works and it brings joy to our family gatherings. Many times during these events we hear, "I learned this at Camp Crescendo." Pam's legacy lives on in the bright eyes and joy of these children. She will be missed but never forgotten. We have also been moved by the loving tribute you have put together for her these last few months on the caringbridge site. Thank you for the wonderful example you have set.

To Pam's family,
Pam had such an immense influence on my son's life, starting in 1st grade, that he called me from college at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, sobbing, with the news. Thank you for sharing her with all of us all these years. We will be eternally grateful to her and can't wait to see her in heaven!

Words cannot express what a bright and wonderful gift your Mom gave to everyone who knew her! I am so grateful that she passed that love on to her family and you share it so generously with all of us. Her light will continue to shine in each of you through the wonderful bond you have. I feel blessed to have been able to share a small part of her passion through my daughter's attendance at Camp Crescendo and all of the amazing Capital High Performances she attended so proudly. It was wonderful to see her at Capital High's Dessert Tasting Event beaming with pride as she will continue to do every day with God's glorious choir of angels! Christa O'Neill/Kayla Carlo

Marshall, Ashley, and Benji,

Your mom was an incredible woman and I am so thankful that I was able to be a part of her life. She was a beautiful lady inside and out and her true beauty shows within all of you. Whenever I have had the opportunity to spend time with all of you, I have always felt so much love and laughter. My dad has been so blessed to have all of you in his life. As you know, your mom was so proud of all of you! She would just have this glow whenever she was speaking about any of you and/or your children. You all have an amazing bond and I know that this bond will help you get through this tough time.

With love,

Traci (Binder) Wright

Dad,

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much you deeply loved Pam. You and I have talked daily - sometimes 2-3 times a day and I have been your little listener. I just wish I could have done more. I know you and Pam had an amazing relationship and she was so good for you in so many ways as you were to her. Pam was your rock and you were her everything. You had so much love for each other and we all saw that daily. I feel so privileged to have been able to see that beautiful love that special night just a few days ago. Pam was so weak and near the end, but when your song came on she blew you that beautiful kiss and then she gathered as much energy and strength as she could spare to sit up and be with you. I love you so much dad. Bret and I are always here for you!

Love,

Traci

I was very sorry to hear of Pam's passing. She was two years ahead of me in high school, but we became friends and she helped me through some of the teen angst adjustments.
