Richard Plov Obituary

Richard Thomas "Dick" Plov passed away on August 24, 2025, in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 80. True to form, he left this world with a smile and one final joke, shared with his beloved wife Jan by his side.

Born on October 13, 1944, in Coos Bay, Oregon, Dick was raised in Reedsport and graduated from Reedsport Union High School in 1962. He went on to earn a degree in Business Administration from Oregon State University in 1969.

Dick's professional life was marked by dedication and accomplishment. He began working on U.S. government contracts in Alaska and built a distinguished 41-year career in contract administration. In 1981, he moved to Boise after being recruited by Morrison-Knudsen.

In February 1965, Dick met Janis Nelson while attending college. They married in 1967 and shared nearly six decades of joyful partnership. Their son Ryan was born in 1986-231 months into their marriage-a fact Dick loved to share with his trademark humor.

Dick lived life with zest and laughter. He had a passion for whitewater rafting that began on Oregon's Deschutes River in 1980; over the next thirty years, he introduced more than 100 people to the thrill of the rapids. He also enjoyed golf, gourmet cooking, Shakespeare plays, and tournament bridge-earning the rank of Life Master along the way. Renowned for his lightning-fast wit and clever puns, Dick brought levity to every room he entered.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris and George Plov. He is survived by his wife Jan; son Ryan; grandchildren Becca and Jacob; and siblings Bob, Kathy, and John.

Dick requested any celebration of life be a posthumous roast-fitting for someone who truly had "one hell of a good time." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Idaho Rivers United in his name.

We worked on the MECP program at MK/WGI and I went on a raft trip with him. I gave him a 22 oz bottle of my home made beer, and he put it under his seat in his truck. During the ride home, bouncing on the road as we were, the beer exploded, and sent a small chard of glass into his bare leg. We're both looking at his leg with a trickle of blood, and the cab smells like a brewery, and he pops off this comment: "What did you give me, al-Qaeda beer???" Still laughing at his wit.
