Sally Rutledge Obituary

Sally Elizabeth Rutledge Sally was born Sept. 15, 1943, in Boise to Helen (Carlson) and Clyde Rutledge. She passed away on June 25, 2008, after a two-year battle against cancer. While undergoing many courses of chemotherapy and radiation, Sally energetically continued to enjoy skiing, tennis, yoga, cycling, weekends in McCall, visits with friends and relatives. After growing up in Boise and graduating from the University of Idaho, Sally began her teaching career in Boise. She worked in Denver for three years and taught skiing at Steamboat Springs for two years. Sally taught fourth grade for 30 years in Meridian and Eagle until retirement in 2005. Her special passion was Idaho history. Sally is survived by her siblings Sharon (Verne) Lawrence, Sandra (James) Lancaster, and Jess Rutledge; by nieces and nephews Sarah Lawrence, Helen (Steve) Hagen, Donald Lawrence, Jonathan (Jennifer) Hill, and Benjamin Hill; and by eleven grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Susan Hill. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church's Emmaus Center, 11th and Hays, Boise 83702, at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 30. Sally's family would like to express our deep gratitude to the MSTI staff, Dr. Kreisle and Jill, Dr. Perez, Dr. Kuhn, the chemo nurses, and the nurses on 4 South for their great efforts to keep Sally on the slopes. We appreciate the loving care Sally received with St. Luke's Hospice staff. We are grateful for the angel, Rommy, who guided us through Sally's last three nights. Memorial contributions may be made to any of these four: Sally Rutledge Tour Scholarship Fund for Epworth Chorale, First United Methodist Church, 717 N. 11th, Boise 83702; Sally Rutledge Elementary Education Scholarship, U. of I. The sad news of Sally's death is being passed around amongst her Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters from the U of I. Her refusal to let her illness limit her life was amazing and inspiring.

We were sorry to learn of Sally's death. Our families spent many years together in the Western Riding Club when we were kids. We have wonderful memories of those times.

My mother, Irene Brown, taught fourth grade with Sally for many years. Sally was always such a nice friend even though there was a 30 year age difference. Sally often called mom or stopped by the cabin to see her in McCall. Mom shed tears over losing her friend, Sally and will miss the calls.

I am so sorry for you loss. I just was sent the news article by a classmate of mine. Miss Rutledge was truly an amazing teacher. I can even now at this momemt remember her smile and how genuinely valued she made me feel at the age of 9. She definitely will be missed, and I know I am better person for having her in my life.

I will always remember her as Miss Rutledge. She was my fourth grade teacher at Meridian Intermediate in the 80's. Miss Rutledge was an amazing teacher. She is one of the teachers that really made an impact on my life with her positive outlook. She will be missed.

I remember Sally from many years ago as a member of the Mountain West Club. She was a pleasure to be around because she always had such an outgoing personality and a great demeanor. She will be greatly missed.
