Valera Vargason Obituary

Valera ("Val" as she was known to her church family and her many friends, or "Leah" as she was called by her family) passed away at home April 11, 2009 at the age of 88. A viewing will be held from 6 until 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Cloverdale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Red Rock Christian Church, 1124 S Roosevelt, Boise, with burial following at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. She was born Nov. 23, 1920 to Harrison Blaine Stewart and Flossie Wheeler Stewart in Heron, South Dakota and was raised in Arlington, South Dakota. Just weeks before her first birthday, her father was killed saving the life of a small boy who was in the path of a falling limb. Blaine was just 30 years old and left behind a wife and six children aged 11 to 1 years old: Vera, Vivian, Vernon, Virginia, Vincent and Valera. Leah was sent to live with her Grandma Wheeler while her mother went to work in the cafe in town. When Leah reached age nine Grandma Wheeler passed away and Leah returned to her family home with her five siblings. She attended Arlington schools graduating in 1938 and that fall went to Normal School for two years becoming an elementary teacher. In 1939, while teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Brookings, South Dakota, she met the love of her life, Donald. They eloped Nov. 1, 1940, as teachers had to remain single in those days. After Don returned home from the service, they moved to Lake County where Leah taught school and Don farmed 500 acres with his family. They moved to Boise in 1949 where she taught grades one through four at the old Amity School near Ten Mile. When the new south side school opened she went there to teach second grade; it is now named Mary McPherson. She retired at the end of the 88/89 school term but returned to teach half day Kindergarten and special reading classes. She was a member of Red Rock Christian Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was an Elder. Leah is survived by sister-in-Iaws Emma Stewart Wisconsin, Lucille Timmerman , Wisconsin, Mildred Vargason - South Dakota, Cecelia Vargason - Boise, nephews Blaine Stewart - Wisconsin, Mike (Kay) Vargason - Meridian, Pat (Vicki) Vargason - Boise, Vern (Lois) Peterson, Don (Janet) Winch - Emmett, nieces Jeanette Francis - Texas, Florene Wilson - Oregon, Daria (Virgil) Fairchild - Payette, Carol Peterson - Boise, Raye McKim - Minnesota, Karen (Bill) Larson - Minnesota, five great nieces, 21 great nephews, numerous great greats, and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Don, her father and mother, her siblings, and three nephews, Dick and Eugene Peterson and Bob Thompson, one niece Rayea Thompson and one great nephew Don Taylor. We would like to thank Hospice nurses and Valera's special care givers Jim and ~ and Annie. Thank you all for your tender love and care for our and your aunt and friend. God bless you all. Leah wanted her life to continue to impact the lives of children in a positive way. She and a few others came up with a dream to build one of the houses within the orphanage complex of Casa Angelina in Tuluche, Guatemala. The house would be named "Leah's House". In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: Leah's Kids, 520 NW 3rd St., Madison, SD 57042 or visit the web site: http://Leahskids.org. Condolences for the family may be submitted online at CloverdaleFuneralHome.com.

Something popped into my email inbox today encouraging me to make an updated post here in rememerance of Leah's passing 16 years ago this week. Many of you may not know that Leah was not able to have children of her own, so when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2009, a non-profit organization was formed called Leah's Kids. With Leah as the inspiration, the hope was to raise enough funds to construct a home in Guatemala where rescued orphans could live in safety for many years to come. Thanks to gifts from many people who had fond memories of Leah (and some peoeple who didn't know her at all) not only did Leah's Kids organization have enough finances to build the 1800 sq ft home in Guatemala called Leah's House, but for the last 16 years Leah's Kids organization has sponsored the food, clothing and education of those rescued orphans in addition to building many homes for needy widows. Thank you all! What was just an idea that came about while sitting with Leah has turned into a legacy for a sweet woman who poured her whole life into children. Thanks again! www.leahskids.org

My wife Sharon and I lived on Henry St. as neighbors to Val for 5-6years. God made an angel and all those that had the chance to be touched or taught by her were blessed like no other. It saddens me to not have been around more , however the thought of her and her dear friend Annie will remain with us forever. God Bless to all in Val's memory.

Mrs. Vargason was my most favorite teacher! I still remember even 30 some years later the stories that she told us of the Little Blue Elf and the Little Black Goblin. I looked forward to school every day when she was my teacher. Very few teachers made as deep an impression on my life as she did. I loved her and was so grateful to have known her. She was indeed a wonderful person and will be very much missed!

I was saddened to hear of her passing. I had her asa 2nd grade teacher and loved her so much. I loved her story of the "Little Blue Elf". I called my mom after I received the card with her obituary in it. I told my mom that I thought Mrs. Vargason was old when I had her. But to a child I guess she was. She and Mr. Potter were two of my favorite teachers at Southside. I hold tight to the memories both teacher helped to create.

My father, Elmer Potter, taught with Valera at Amity School & Southside School. My dad spoke so highly of her and regarded her as a great friend and co-worker. Mrs. Vargason was also 2nd grade teacher to my brother Ben & myself. She was a great teacher and advocate to children. We'll never forget all the "adventures" in her classroom.

I will never forget Mrs. Vargason. She was my 2nd Gr. teacher at Locust Grove many years ago. She was one of my teachers that was instrumental in my decision to become a teacher. I taught second grade the last seven years of my teaching experience, and many times remembered the Little Blue Elf and Little Black Goblin stories. I will always remember her kindness and brilliant smile. She was a wonderful teacher and touched my heart.

Mrs. Vargason was my 2nd Grade teacher as well, in the 1958-1959 School Year at Locust Grove Elementary School, Meridian, Idaho. Her daily adventure stories of Little Blue Elf and Little Black Goblin were so much fun! She was such a blessing to so many.

"Good Morning to you, good morning to you, we're all in our places, with Bright shining faces..." nothing made the trip to Disneyland more fun and more exciting, then Aunt Leah singing to you in the morning! My favorite memory was getting off the Indiana Jones ride and Aunt Leah turned to me and said "now, we have to act EXTREMELY scared so that Grandma (Hersom) won't want to go on! wouldn't that be funny?" I last saw aunt leah at thanksgiving, and she never stopped laughing, smiling, or cracking jokes with me! She was an amazing woman and will be missed dearly!

Mrs. Vargason was my 2nd grade teacher in 1979-1980 at Mary McPherson Elementary school in Meridian. To this day she remains my favorite and most inspiring teacher. It was an honor and a joy to be a student in her classroom and I have never forgotten her wonderful tales of "Little Blue Elf" and Little Black Goblin. Every day with Mrs. Vargason was a wonderful new adventure. God bless her and her family.

Leah was also teacher of the year for the state of Idaho, and no doubt an inspiration for legions of children. My kids, her great, great grandnephews, mostly knew her from afar, but had tremendous admiration for her. We always looked forward to our summer meetings with Leah and Don and will never forget the joy she brought to our lives. Cheers to Leah and all the Stewart siblings. They were an amazing bunch!
