Vivian Mendieta Obituary

Vivian "Viv" Gabica Mendieta Viv was born to Francisco Gabica and Marcelina Bengoechea Gabica in Winnemucca, Nev. on April 22, 1931. She passed away on May 7, 2008 at the Canyon West Care Center in Caldwell, Idaho at the age of 77. She was born the third of five children and reared on the Rock Creek Ranch at Orovada, Nev. She attended grade school at Orovada and lived in Winnemucca during the school months to go to high school, where she graduated from Humboldt County High School. She then moved to San Francisco to attend Beauty College. At a very young age she helped care for her little brother, John when their mother passed away. She married Las Mendieta on Oct. 15, 1952. They had a son and a daughter while residing in Winnemucca. They moved to Jordan Valley, Ore. for a few years and then returned to Winnemucca where she worked for the Nevada Telephone Company for many years. She retired and moved back to Jordan Valley when they purchased the Circle Bar ranch on South Mountain. She will always be remembered for her good Basque cooking and that no one ever left her table hungry, there was always an extra bed to spend the night. Viv was preceded in death by her father and mother, and a brother Frankie. She is survived by her husband Las and son Frank of Jordan Valley, a daughter Lisa and son-in-law, Tom Burke of San Martin, Calif. A sister Angela Mentaberry and brother Phil Gabica of Winnemucca, and a brother John and sister-in-law Gene Gabica of Emmett, Idaho. She was a loving and caring aunt to numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and cousins. At her request there will be no funeral services. It was Viv's desire to be cremated and have her remains scattered over the Rock Creek Mountain. At a later date a celebration of her life may be held along the creek

My Aunt Viv was the nicest lady I knew! I do not remember once in my whole life that she ever had anything but kind or humorous words for me. I along with my daughters will miss her terribly. We were lucky enough to have her come stay with us a few times and the amazing story is that all these hummingbirds would appear upon her arrival...(which never came around before or after her visit). I really think they followed her from Juniper Mountain, where she used to feed them her homemade nectar! To this day, whenever we see one of these fierce litle birds-we think of Aunt Viv, as she was so much like them-small in stature-but oh so strong! John Stewart sang a song called "The Razor Backed Woman" which pretty much summed up her amazing character.
From the time I was little, I would go stay with her, Frank, Lisa and Las and there would always be some great story that would come out of the visit. One I recall, because she was such a great cook (and she could make a meal out of anything for as many people as there were at her table on any given night) was when me and a family friend-who had been out at the ranch fishing, had to go get milk from a neighboring ranch...Well, for some reason, all they had to give it to us in was a large & open tin bowl. I don't know if you have been on the 'road to the ranch' but it is a bumpy one to say the least...Anyway, we carried that pan all the way back to the Circle Bar, even getting out to walk across wash-outs, all so she would have the milk to make her famous Basque custard. She really laughed every time that story was retold because she could not figure out why we had not just stopped and dumped the milk out...it was still the best custard I ever ate!!!
Aunt Viv-we will miss-but you will always be with us---Love Roger
