March 21, 1927 - January 31, 2024
Boise, Idaho - William "Bill" George Plueckhahn, 96, passed away on January 31, 2024 after a long illness. He was born in Carmine, Texas, the only child of William and Katherine Plueckhahn. Bill grew up in Carmine, Texas, graduating from La Grange High School in 1944 where he lettered in football and basketball. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting Honor Society. Following high school, he enrolled at Baylor University. World War II would interrupt his education and Bill enlisted in the US Coast Guard. He served aboard the USS General Meigs throughout the war. His tour of duty encompassed three theatres of war: European, Pacific, and Middle East. In later years, he often recounted his experiences during the war; such as, being in the funeral processional of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945.
After the war, Bill returned to Baylor University, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. He would later attend Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York in 1965 and SMU School of Law in Dallas, Texas from 1966-1968.
On December 30, 1949, he married Gladys J. Juren and they would be blessed with two daughters, Cheryl and Charlotte.
Bill began his career with the US Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, in January of 1950. His employment required relocating to many areas, finally to Dallas, Texas where he retired after 32 years. His last assignment was appellate conferee with the Appeals Division. After retiring from federal service, he began a second career in accounting with Bright & Bright, LLP, retiring in 1999.
In 2001, Bill and Gladys moved to Boise, Idaho to be nearer to their two daughters and grandchildren. Bill missed his fishing retreat on the lake in Piney Woods of East Texas, but loved the fly fishing in Idaho. He also found great pleasure in photography, traveling, gardening, and gourmet cooking. He mastered Beef Wellington and will always be remembered by family and friends for his delicious smoked ribs and container grown tomatoes.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cathedral of the Rockies. Bill was active in the church throughout his life, serving in many capacities. He was also an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church in Dallas.
Bill is survived by his wife of 75 years Gladys; daughter Charlotte Ann Plueckhahn of Boise, Idaho; son-in-law William S. Harris of Everett, Washington; grandchildren Matthew (Min) Harris of Kirkland, Washington, Kenneth Harris of Seattle, Washington, Amanda (Scott) Harris of Sammamish, Washington, and Jeffrey Harris of Paris, France; great grandchildren Andy, Daniel, and Mark of Kirkland, Washington; brother-in-law Dennis (Ruth) Juren of Boerne, Texas; and one nephew and two nieces.
