William Slattery Obituary

William "Bill" J. Slattery D.D.S.

June 16, 1939 - January 1, 2025

Boise, Idaho - With profound sadness we say goodbye to Bill Slattery, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to so many whose lives he touched. Bill passed away peacefully of complications of heart failure with his family by his side.

Born on June 16, 1939, in Atkinson, NE, to Thomas and Claire Slattery, Bill departed his life with immense courage and pride, leaving behind many people who loved him. In our grief, we are left to celebrate his accomplishments and joyous memories of a truly admirable man.

Bill was the youngest of four and grew up working in his father's hardware store. Bill loved playing both basketball and track, joking that his state track record still stands (in feet). Each summer, he and his brother Jim hitchhiked from Nebraska to Idaho to fight forest fires outside of McCall. He loved Idaho so much that he called it his home. Bill graduated from St Joseph's Catholic High School in 1957 and attended Creighton University, where he earned a degree in General Dentistry from Creighton University School of Dentistry in 1965. Bill met his life-long love, Jane Nancy Jedlicka in Omaha and the two were married in 1962, the beginnings of a 62-year love affair filled with adventure.

They eventually settled in Boise, after he served in the military at Mountain Home AFB. He was one of the base dentists who prepared pilots and servicemen for Vietnam duty. He devoted 34 years to his dental practice in Boise, providing him a perfect opportunity to do what he loved taking care of patients he called friends and also practice his stand-up routine. In 1975, Bill rented space in his basement to Ward and Joe Parkinson and partners, giving them their first offices in Boise. If you asked Bill, he would tell you how proud he was to have shared in the storied beginnings of Micron Technology.

Bill retired in 2001 and perfected his true calling as a devoted grandparent. Grampie loved time with his grandsons. He could be found on the sidelines of every soccer match, track meet and hockey game. Retirement also gave he and Jane more time to travel the west in search of "treasures" and adventure.

We loved our husband, father, grandfather and uncle deeply as did his friends and many patients. We will try to carry on his legacy of humor, kindness and generosity. Bill was a man who valued his faith, family life, earnest hard work, his friends and community. He has cemented our fond memories of countless camping trips and extended family gatherings to Stanley, McCall, Sun Valley and Nebraska and Iowa.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Jane; his son, Dr. John Slattery (Stacy); and grandsons, Connor (Lily), Will and Aidan. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Margaret McKay (Jerry); sister-in-law, Mary Ann Slattery; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Claire Slattery; step-mother, Ada Slattery; two brothers, Dr. Tom Slattery and Dr. James Slattery; sister-in-law, Beverly Slattery; and his father and mother-in-law, Henry and Gladys Jedlicka.

Funeral services will be held at St. John's Catholic Church at 11 a.m., on January 18th, with a reception held at Hillcrest Country Club in Boise. Interment at Veterans Cemetery to follow on January 21st. In lieu of flowers, the Slattery family asks that a donation be made in Bill's name to Bishop Kelly High School Scholarships 7009 Franklin Road Boise, ID 83709. Bishop Kelly High School and Catholic Schools were very important to Bill. We love you Bill, Dad, Grampie, your life is imprinted in our hearts forever.

Bill Slattery was my beloved uncle.
My father Tom's youngest brother.
All four children from Atkinson Nebraska. Call Mary Jim and Bill..we're extremely special people. they were kind, caring talkative
Fun and unpretentious. They would give you the shirt off their back. You could truly lean on any one of the four. All 4 siblings stayed married.. devoted wife and husbands ..
When John was in dental school in San Francisco. I got to see Bill fairly often when he would visit down here..

You knew he was there for you ..

I discovered borrego springs through Bill Slattery ..
My partner Richard purchasing a house after Bill and Jane showed us the ropes.
Bill loved for me to call him. when I was down in borrego and give him the rundown on borrego
I stayed in touch with him all of his life.. he loved to send pictures of his grandsons!!!
So proud!! .
A truly remarkable guy.
My boyfriend went golfing with him in borrego and he said he talked to every single person.. the pro shop the groundskeepers the people behind them the people in front of them the people at the lunch Cafe.
Richard said he didn't miss one person to talk to.

Dear Jane,
I want you to know that the celebration of Bill`s life at the Cathedral this morning was fabulous!

Saint Johns was packed... Did it surprise you? No! What a guy you chose so many years ago. Your
grandchildren were darling ,your son did a Five Star job! I
He was tender and "real". Just fabulous.

It was so wonderful to walk into that cathedral and walk into people. That I knew and then some of them I didn´t know if I knew because I didn´t recognize them and they were cracking up because we bare all old And we didn´t recognize each other so we started to giggle and laugh and share. Everything was just fabulous about the ceremony, including the priest who knew Bill personally ,
I sat next to Karen Marmillion and also Pat Gustavel, and then the owners of our favorite restaurant... Now I can´t remember the name of it... Oh, the Frences and they were there! Etc. So many people!, It was like old home week for so many of us. Your tears walking in touched my heart. You loved your dear Bill deeply, and I could relate. You two were married in 1962 as were Rich and I I.
D ear Jane, It will be so different for you, but one thing I do know... you and Bill talked!! Those conversations and dialogue sharing saw part of you, put on some music when you are feeling sad.

If you ever want to talk or just have a cup of coffee. Please don´t hesitate. Here is my number:

Rich and I so liked Bill! He was always so welcoming whenever we ran into Bill or Bill and Jane together.
Bill always had that twinkle in his eye and even though we did not " run around " in the same circle of friends, we so enjoyed his obvious upbeat manner and sincere ways. He was a regular ,non pretentious guy. (Rich and I were also married in 1962 a

What can I say? Dr. Slattery and Jane were like a second family to me. I met them the day I walked into his office to start working for them. He had a charisma about him that meant everything the day you came under his care. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Always positive energy for fun and adventure! He was a prince among men, keeping his moral and ethical standards elevated over the years! He will be truly missed! Thanks for the opportunity of employment and friendship throughout the years. YOU were the Idaho gem!

I appreciated Dr. Slattery greatly, as a member of the basement Micron startup team, but he was also our family dentist until he retired. His retirement was a sad day for us, but we were happy for him. Rest in peace, dear friend. You earned it.
