Duane Ankney Obituary

Duane Ankney was a coal miner, a lawmaker & a master mason of Hiram Lodge #52 in Forsyth, MT.

The pride he felt for his coal community built over 40+ years in Colstrip will sustain a lifetime. He was affectionally called Mr. Colstrip. He passed away peacefully on Sept. 6, 2025 at age of 79, surrounded by family after years battling heart disease.

He was born on April 14, 1946 in Lewiston, Idaho, raised by "the most loving parents," Glen and May Ankney & numerous aunties, uncles, cousins & friends on the Lapwai (Nez Perce) Reservation. He remembered his childhood as "dreamlike" with "plenty of open space to run."

He left Idaho for a 5-year stint in the Navy in the footsteps of his uncles, who were his biggest role models. This took him from a base in California to the Philippines to Japan and back, aboard a plane, a carrier & a buggy. "I hardly ever had a bad day in the Navy, except for the powdered eggs." He left California after his service for Eastern Montana, where his parents had built a life in Crow Agency & Lodge Grass, MT owning & operating the LG Hotel & other properties. His father told him if he ever came, he would never leave, & he never did. He met & married Carol, a teacher & an instant family was born with Dusti, Chris & a dog named Camas. He started working in Wyoming mines & at Decker Coal. The family moved to Colstrip in 1983 while he was working for Western Energy as a skilled laborer & later retiring as a processing supervisor. Colstrip is where the family was raised, friends were welcomed, & stories were told. Celebrating many achievements with a party on the hill.

His storied 16-year career as a lawmaker is well-documented. He was a champion of the people. Governor Greg Gianforte sharing; "He was a steadfast advocate for Colstrip, Coal, & Montana. He effectively served with dedication and heart," and Congressman Ryan Zinke acknowledging his "integrity, hard work ethic, and selfless service to others."

Many closest to him knew him as much more: the patriarch of a family tree that continues to grow in every direction, a veteran, a storyteller, and a voice for the unabashed working man. As his health waned, he was grateful for the time he was able to spend with those closest to him.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Carol. His children: Dustine (Kim), Chris (Ashli), Pete (Sarah) Nick, Kevin (Laura). Grandkids: Logan, Danae, Dante, Caitlin (Clay), Caden & many that considered him papa, friend & advisor. His adopted Crow Sister Trudy One Bear & Family (hence the name Goodwind).

He was preceded in death by his parents; Glen & May Ankney and is favorite sister, Carol (Sis), uncles, aunts, cousins & friends.

Many thanks for family & friends that has reached out for numerous visits & prayers. These visits were highlights for him. A special thanks to Marti Murphy for always being on hand. Thanks to all Drs, nurses & caregivers that helped in combating & caring for Duane during his battle with this disease.

A memorial is being planned for Friday May 22nd 2026 at 11:00 am, at Colstrip High School with burial following.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Billings Resue Mission, Syd's Wish or a charity of your choice.
