Chesley Milam Obituary

Chesley Louis Milam, Sr.

Sandy Springs, SC

Chesley Louis Milam, Sr. passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017, in his home surrounded by his family. Born on a small farm in Sandy Springs, he was the son of Henry Pickett Milam and Genelle Dalrymple Milam. Chesley married the love of his life, Lee Phillips Milam, in 1954. Chesley was graduated from Clemson (College) University, where he earned a degree in Animal Husbandry. Chesley was commissioned in the US Army, serving his active duty in Germany. He spent much of his military service in leadership assignments at the 108th Training Command USAR, retiring at the rank of Colonel. Chesley served on the Board for the Sandy Springs Water District, and numerous boards and committees for Anderson County. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, elder, and treasurer. A lifelong Clemson Tiger fan, he attended many games and several bowls. He was a farm boy at heart, impressing upon his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren a love for agriculture and the land. After several years of raising cattle, Chesley built an accomplished career in agricultural chemical sales and sales management with ICI Americas (Syngenta).

Chesley loved family, especially his wife Lee of 62 years. Surviving are his three children, Chesley Jr. "Chep" (Tracy) of Sandy Springs, Phillip "Phil" (Susie) of York, SC, and Mary Repko (Regis) of Denver, NC; six grandchildren, Amanda Smith (Ashley), Brian Milam (Sarah), Daniel Milam (Nicole), Steven Kopp, Ryan Repko, and John Michael Repko; three great grandchildren, Norah Kate Smith, Colton Milam, and Madeline Smith; sister-in-law, Nan Phillips Bass, his only nephew, John Bass, Jr. (Dale), and grand nieces, Ginny Bass, and Abby Bass.

The family would like to express gratitude to the amazing people that cared for Chesley. The "care dream team" included Kenny Caldwell (deceased 2016), Larry Newell, John Hill, Christopher Lee, Dorunte' Eberhart, and Dennis Maxwell. Hospice services were provided by Hospice of the Upstate. The nurses included Tomme Kenworthy, Ann Courtney, and Robert Plott. We will always be grateful for the love and care you provided to Chesley and our family.

The funeral service for Chesley will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 7, at Mount Zion Presbyterian Church, 1501 Sandy Springs Road. The family will receive friends at the conclusion of the service. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 429, Sandy Springs, SC 29677 or Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

To the families: So sorry to hear of Mr. Chesley's passing. We are the Hunter family and grew up on the Milam farm in Sandy Springs during the 60's. Our parents, Johnny J, and Zenobia Hunter and us, lived in the small farm house behind the Milams and the Coates family.

We so loved the Milam family. Some of us attended Pendleton school with Chep and Phillip.

My sister and I drove throughby the farm house about 2 years ago, and was surprised to see the house still there, in back of the big brick house. My sister worked at the Cracker Barrel some years ago as a waitress and was surprised with pleasure when Mr. Chesley was dining there, recognized her.

We have very, very fond memories of Mr. Chesley and Mrs. Lee, their children, and Mr. Henry and Mrs Gennelle. Such wonderful, respectful and loving people. I still remember the apple trees in Ms. Genelle's yard.

May the peace and favor of God comfort you all at this time and may the many memories live on in your hearts forever. I know they will with us.

Sincerely, the Hunter Family,
New Light Community.

I am deeply saddened by this news. Ches was a great friend and mentor to me. He gave me my first real job opportunity and I'm forever grateful. I learned a lot from him over the years and Ches prepared me well to succeed in my career and I owe him a great deal. We had a lot of fun times together that will never be forgotten. Lee, I love you and am so sorry for your loss. Susan and I will pray that the Lord will give you and your entire family the strength needed in this difficult time.
