George Calhoun Langston, 84, husband of Jo Ann Harbert Langston, died Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Rainey Hospice House.
Born April 20, 1930 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Judson Breazeale (J.B.) and Lula Mae Gibson Langston. He was a graduate of Anderson Boys High School, Anderson College and the University of South Carolina. He also attended Harvard Business School. While a student at Anderson University, he played on the basketball team. He also enjoyed golf, tennis, boating, sailing and deep sea fishing. He was also a Private Pilot. He was active in Boy Scouts of America where he was an Eagle Scout, member of the Order of the Arrow and later served as a Scout Master. Mr. Langston served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a former member of the Highland Country Club in LaGrange, Ga.
Mr. Langston had a long career in textiles. He joined Milliken and Company in 1955 and held many positions in the company until departing in 1979. He then joined M. Lowenstein Company where he was a Corporate Vice President. Later, he was a Vice President with J. P. Stevens. In 1985, he purchased the woolen-worsted department of J.P. Stevens and formed Forstmann and Company, Inc. where he served as C.E.O. and Chairman of the Board. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants, Financial Executive Institute, APICS, Institute of Industrial Engineers and SIM. He was a National Director with American Textile Manufacturer Institute and was a Director with Georgia Textile Manufacturers. He was also President and C.E.O. of GCL Associates.
He was active with Rotary International where was a Past President with the Greer-Lyman Club, and was a former member of the LaGrange, Ga. Club, the Hilton Head Island Club, the Anderson Club and was a Harris Fellow in the Dublin, Ga. Club.
While a resident of Hilton Head Island, Mr. Langston was a member of the Greater Island Committee, Chairman of Transportation (LRTA) and was a member of the Navy League of Hilton Head Island. He was the owner of Key Realty and Rental and was a member of the Million Dollar Real Estate Club. While a member of Hilton Head First Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon and Chairman of the Stewardship Committee.
He was a former Board member of Anderson University and was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon.
Survivors include his wife of over 62 years, Jo Ann Langston; three children, Andrea Dale Langston Mallory and husband, Richard Mallory of LaGrange, Ga; George Michael Langston and wife, Karen of Anderson; and Lisa Ann Langston Connelly and husband, Donald Connelly, Jr. of Pittsburg, Pa; eight grandchildren, Joanna Lindsey Mallory and fiance', Aaron H. Dowd, Jr. of Costa Rica; Matthew Henry Mallory and wife, Amanda of LaGrange, Ga; Katie Oliver, Benjamin Michael Langston and Emily Helen Langston, all of Anderson; Ashley Marie Connelly Young and husband, Doyle Young III, Alise Meagan Connolly and Donald Francis Connelly III, all of Pittsburg, Pa; three great grandchildren, Jackson Henry Mallory, McRae Catherine Mallory and Mattie Dale Mallory, all of LaGrange, Ga; his sister, Edna Langston McKenzie of Anderson; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Boulevard Baptist Church in Anderson conducted by Dr. Johnny F. McKinney and Dr. John Keller. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will greet friends at the cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Anderson University in memory of George Langston, 316 Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621 or Rotary International through your local Rotary Club.
