Gregory Ammons Obituary

Gregory H. Ammons
PENDLETON, S.C.
Gregory Herman Ammons, 56, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at his home with his wife, mother and children at his side.
Mr. Ammons was born in Charlotte, NC and was the son of Marjorie Robinson Ammons and the late Herman Ammons. He studied at both North Greenville University and was a music business major at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. Greg was owner and sole photographer of Ammons Portrait Studio and Gallery in Pendleton and was a member of Pendleton First Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Grace Evans Ammons; a daughter, Mary Catrin (Cat) Ammons and John Gregory Ammons. Greg took great pride in photographing the people and history of the Town of Pendleton. He often said that he was not sure if he fell in love with the town or with his wife, Grace, first. He was proud of his daughter, Cat, who is a voice student at the prestigious SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities and took equal pleasure in his son John's budding love of playing football for Pendleton High School.
Pendleton has lost an artist, a devoted merchant and a man who loved his family and his town with great passion. Thankfully, we have the legacy of his beautiful photography with which to remember this special spirit.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Pendleton First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to Anderson County Humane Society, P O Box 2262, Anderson, S.C. 29622 or to Pendleton High School Choral/Drama Program, 7324 Hwy 187, Anderson, S.C. 29625.
Condolences may be expressed online at www.robinsonfuneralhomes.com or at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, which is assisting the family.

Gracie and family,
Russ and I were greatly shocked and saddened to hear that Greg had passed away.
As you know, Greg was our family photographer since the early 90's. He took many family portraits, portraits of our granddaughters and our son Wyck's wedding in Savannah. The last time we talked, we discussed the possibility of a family portrait this Christmas when the whole family will be here. I am so happy that he did photograph our youngest granddaughter's five year old portrait this spring.
Greg was truly a professional, but more importantly, a very proud father who beamed when he talked about his children.
The Heberts will truly miss seeing him on the square in Pendleton.
We regret we were out of town on the day of his funeral and I did not get to see you in person, Gracie.
Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Mrs. Ammons & Children,
Just learned today of Greg's passing. I was out-of-town and did not know about.
Twelve years ago, he took the pictures of my daughter and son-in-law's wedding and they were beautiful.
Just want you to know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

God Bless,

I had the pleasure of working with Greg on the yearbook staff at Woodmont High School in 1992-1993. He was always willing to help. He was always a fixture at the Woodmont High School pageants my mom directed taking picture of every contestant for hours on end. Our prayers are with your family.

Grace,

Although I haven't lived in Pendleton for many years, it is part of me and always will be. Mom and Jimmy often mentioned you and Greg when I visited. They had run into you on the Square or whatever. Mom was very proud of the pics Greg took of her and Victoria that day. I'm so sorry I won't be there for the funeral services; my heart will be thinking of you and the kids. Please know that Greg was greatly loved by the whole town, and will be missed for a long time.

Kind regards,

Jim and Kate Palmer

My dear friend Grace, and Cat and John, I wish I had words that would soothe your aching hearts, but all I can say I that you three were the center of Greg's world. As an artist, he left this world more beautiful than he found it, but when he wanted to look at what was most beautiful to him, he looked to you. May you all find comfot and peace.

It is difficult to express the shock of hearing of Greg's passing. Losing a cousin at such a young and vibrant age is difficult to absorb. I hold the family close to my heart and mind in this difficult time.

Greg was a too-rare combination of businessman and artist. He loved the town of Pendleton and his passion for his wife and his pride in their children was enormous. I remember his visit to our home with his son John when the two of them came to take our family portraits. His skill and sensitivity were amazing. His artist's eye is all over te finished products. Pendleton has lost a treasure and his family's loss is enormous.

To Gracie, who will always be a little high school student to me, I send empathy and a world of hugs. For all the years I taught at PHS, my photo and my students' photos were taken by Greg or his father. Too young, Gracie, and I have some idea of what you're enduring. Call me when you want to talk or get some good suggestions for books. Love to you and your lovely family. Because of some medical issues (nothing serious) I will probably not be at visitation or services, but, if I'm not, I hope you'll understand that I'm really there. I'll be in touch. Love and many, many hugs. Claire
