Carlton Round Obituary

SOUTH COUNTY, RI - Carlton Warren Round, age 68, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Kenneth W. and Joan T. (Maguire) Round.

He was a brother of Steven Round, the late Kevin J. Round, and the late Kenneth C. Round.

Carl resided in Johnston for much of his life before moving to South County in 1993. He was employed as a Principal Cook for Dining Services at the University of Rhode Island, where he worked for 28 years before retiring. Carl also owned his own painting and wallpapering business, earning a stellar reputation for the quality of his work. At URI (and in nearly every other place he spent time) Carl built lasting relationships with students, with coworkers, with faculty and staff. Many of those relationships lasted his entire life and were a source of great comfort and pride to Carl at the end.

After retiring, Carl could focus on the work he truly loved - using his vast knowledge and dogged work ethic to rehabilitate old houses. The plan (or so he said) was to repair and remodel the houses to sell them. But Carl often fell in love with the homes he rescued and the people he worked with to rescue them. Hed tell stories of the hardwood floors he and his buddy had installed, the plumbing job he did with an old friend (in exchange for help replacing a deck), the stone chimney he built with his father, or the cabinets he'd refinished with his brother. And so, when it came time to sell, he often decided to look for renters instead. At the peak of his retirement venture Carl had houses from Maine to Florida. As he would say, not bad for an old swampah who started as a cook, heh?

Carl might have been small and gruff on the exterior, with a propensity to blow his cork from time to

time, but he had an incredibly large heart. He was one of the most generous and sincere men you could ever meet. If you were feeling down, arguing with family, or struggling to make ends meet, you were lucky to cross paths with Carl. He made people laugh. He genuinely listened to peoples problems and offered thoughtful advice. He was unwavering in his honesty, earning himself the nickname Tell-It-Like-It-Is Carl. Those who knew Carl best would agree that the world is a little less warm, a little less funny, and a little less matter-of-fact without him.

Carl was the proud father of Jennifer Round, her husband Eric Gaus, and former son-in-law Michael Ragozzino. He was a grandfather to Nathan, Eleanor, and Ayden. Carl is also survived by his cherished friend and companion, Patricia Leporacci-Marino.

A visitation will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 10 am 12 noon, with a service to follow at 12 noon in the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home of Patrick Quinn Funerals & Cremations, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown. Carls burial will be private.
