Mable McLean Obituary

Dr. Mable McLean CONCORD Dr. Mable Parker McLean, President Emerita of Barber-Scotia College, died of heart failure Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at the age of 89. Dr. McLean, an alumnus of Barber-Scotia, made history in 1974 when she became the ninth president of the 107-year-old institution and the first female president. She was a steadfast force in the life of the institution both during her two non-consecutive terms, and her interim appointment, totaling nearly 18 years. Upon her retirement, the Board of Trustees bestowed two honors upon her, naming her President Emerita and naming the college union the Mable Parker McLean College Union. She said, "The privilege and opportunity of serving as a chief executive of my alma mater have constituted a Herculean challenge every day of the eighteen years that I served. Do I regret this time from my life? No, it was an addition to my life, a more certain means of putting something back into the very institution that gave me my entr‚e to a better life. For such a gift, no return is dear enough to compensate for the investment that Barber-Scotia made in me." A member of the 42-year-old United Negro College Fund (UNCF), at the time, she made history by being the first female elected to chair the Council of Presidents. She earned her undergraduate education at Barber-Scotia College and Johnson C. Smith University, and her graduate degree from Howard University. She did post-graduate work at Northwestern University, the Catholic University and Harvard University. Her career spanned a period of about 60 years starting as an assistant director of a nursery school, a classroom teacher, a department chairperson, an academic dean, and culminating as a college president. Nearly a third of her career was spent as President of Barber-Scotia, having served at three separate times, 1974-1988, 1994-1996, and as interim 2006-2007. Dr. McLean steered the institution through some turbulent times in the 70's, 80's and mid-'90's. The institution flourished and remained a very viable part of the community under her leadership. Upon her retirement, Dr. McLean remained in the Concord community. She was involved in her community and provided leadership in various organizations, North Carolina Museum of Art - Trustee; Member, Executive Committee of North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities; Past-President, Concord Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Women Educators; Member, Board of Directors, Children's Home Society of North Carolina; chairman, member, Cabarrus County Chamber of Commerce, Concord; Sub-Committee of the Committee on Racial/Ethnic Schools and Colleges of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.); Member, Executive Committee of the Committee on Higher Education of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.); Adjunct Professor, Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa.; Member, Board of Church Visitors of Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, N.C.; Member, Board of Trustees, Barber-Scotia College; Member, Judicial Commission of the Presbytery of Mid-Atlantic; Member, Stonewall Jackson Community Advisory Council, Cabarrus County, Concord; Lecturer, civic organizations, educational institutions, and churches. Dr. Mable Parker McLean was a teacher, soror, fellow elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA, fellow alumna, and a friend. This is being written on the Fifth Anniversary year of her passing. I did not make an entry in this document at the time of her passing because I was trying to make sure that her wishes for her "Homegoing Services" were carried out. I believe that she would have been pleased. I also believe that no one really dies to those of us left behind, if he is remembered. She is very fondly remembered, by me, a member of the Barber-Scotia College Class of 1968.

Dr. McLean was truly a trooper. She paved the way for many. She was the President of Barber-Scotia when I graduated in 1971. I went to visit her in the spring of 2011 and her last remarks to me will always linger in my heart. She said, "I begin my day with God." Then she continued her conversation. This was priceless. May God bless the family.

Dr. McClean was instrumental in my service as a teacher in Randolph County and Mooresville Graded Schools. She stressed the importance of being professional. Her guidance and instruction led me to serve, with love, in the classroom for 45 years. She will definitely be missed. Her passing is not only a great loss to her family but also to Barber Scotia College.

So sorry to hear of Dr.McLeans passing. She was a "roommate" of my mothers (Olivia) during a stay at The Heritage in Concord. What an honor it was to have met such an extraordinary lady. May your memories comfort you and all who knew her.

Through her example and wise counsel, Dr. McLean left us a legacy of the unlimited power of love -- our love of God and His for us; the love of words and The Word; the love of the education we receive and that which we share with others; the love of humankind, including those with whom we have disputes; the love of self; and of course, the love of her dear "Scotia". Thank you Dr. McLean.

She inspired me to teach;
She trained me to teach;
She critiqued my methods of teaching;
She taught me, by example, to love my profession;
She showed me the importance of educating future generations;
She shaped my character and reminded me that I needed God in my life to accomplish all things worthwhile. Amazingly, she did these things using "only" a soft whispering voice.
Thank you Dr. Mable McLean.
My prayers are with your family.

Dr. Mable Parker McLean, was truly a drum major for higher education, finer womanhood and leadership. As I began my journey at Barber-Scotia under the leadership of Dr. McLean from 1974 - 1978 this was an honor. Dr. McLean helped to instill in me the true values of what it was to preserver, letting nothing sabotage or deter your true destiny. Always believing and having faith in God and
yourself. As I reflect back Dr. McLean was speaking to a few of us girls one day and said (I'll never forget) " you ladies are worth more than a hamburger and a milkshake". Dr. McLean will truly be missed. I will continue to keep the family
in my thoughts and prayers.
RIP Dr. Mable Parker McLean
