Sarah Sawyer Newton

Sarah Newton Obituary

CONCORD - Sarah Sawyer Newton, 63, of 101 Terrytown St., passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Dec. 31, 2008 after an extended illness. She was born August 25, 1945 in Norfolk, Va. the daughter of the late Robert A. Sawyer and Azalee Cromer Sawyer. She had retired from Bell South, Charlotte. She was also co-owner of Newton Properties in Concord. She was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School in 1963. Her hobbies included taking care of her grandchildren. She was a member of Kannapolis West A Street Church of God where she was involved with the Helping Hands Benevolence Ministry, a greeter, and a Sunday school teacher. She was also God mother of Addison Sarah Fowler. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Kannapolis West A Street Church of God officiated by Rev. Sam Crisp. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. She is survived by her husband, Don Newton Sr.; 2 daughters, Teresa N. Ross and husband Steve, and Crystal Hicks Neal; a son, Peewee Newton and wife Michelle; 6 grandchildren, Spencer Newton Ross, Jade Olivia Ross, Christian Bradley Newton, Josiah Marshall Newton, Xander Decatur Newton, Isaiah Lashaun Neal, all of Concord; her brother, Robert G. Sawyer and wife Betty of Charlotte; a sister, Margaret S. Luther and husband Jerry of Salisbury; 4 nephews; 1 niece; and numerous cousins. Memorials may be made to Kannapolis West A Street Church of God % Helping Hands Benevolence Ministry, 2211 West A St., Kannapolis, NC 28081. Whitley's Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Robert and Family,

I just learned of Sarah's death, and I am so sorry... She and I worked/laughed together soooo many times during our days at BellSouth. What a wonderful, caring, and giving human being she was! I consider her a cherished gift for being a part of my life... My thoughts/prayers will be with you/family during this sad time of life. God bless you now, and always.

I remember Sarah's effervesant personality. She & I were in the same circle that met at Edna Stafford,s home. She always brought a lot of joy & excitement to our meetings. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sarah was a beautiful, radiant Christian lady. Her light shown bright to everyone she was around.
I have such fond memories of trips that we took with Prime Time, ladies' retreats and special occasions that we spent time together decorating, especially all those trees that we painted white for the Christmas party. Also, I will never forget her for her love and concern as our son grew up at West "A" and went off to college and then got married and lived hours away from us. Sarah always asked about him. The best way for me to describe her is that she was a "jewel," a beautiful jewel now in Heaven still radiating that beautiful smile and wonderful personality and now using it to praise her Savior.

Our prayers continue for Don, Pee Wee, Teresa, and all the family.

Sarah was the first girl I ever bought anything, it was that old 45 record of "Mother-in-law". She was so sweet & beautiful. I've remembered her for all these years, & had not seen her since 1962. I know we will all miss Sarah terribly. She was such a "Special" person in so many lives. While we know Sarah is with her Savior, we are sad for ourselves without Sarah here. I can not remember a life without Sarah in it.
