James Ragard Obituary

James E. Ragard, 81, of Great Bend, was called home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife 62 years, Mary Joan.

He is also survived by five children, John and Tami Ragard, Ellen and Rick Dorman, Cindy and Jim Gillespie, Tom and Maria Ragard, and Bob and Kathy Ragard; 15 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; a sister, Joan Haines; sister-in-law, Barb Tamke; numerous nieces and nephews; and faithful companion, Casey.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard; and his parents, Nicholas and Ethel Ragard.

Jim served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was the owner of Reale's Pizza for many years, past owner of Danceland with his sister, and 38 year employee with the Lackawanna Railroad. Jim had won the Binghamton Press's Bowling Tournament with Chris DeLucia. He was a life member of both the American Legion Post #357 and the V.F.W. Post #6223. Jim enjoyed his lottery and his ticket playing. He was a faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Barnes-Kasson Hospital and Dr. B. Patel for the care he received and also the staff of S.N.F. for making sure that Mom was with Dad daily.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Great Bend, on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Friends called on Friday at the Tuttle-Yeisley Funeral Home, Inc., Hallstead.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lourdes Oncology, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY 13905, the V.F.W., the American Legion, or the Great Bend Hose Company No. 1.

To the Ragard Family - my most heartfelt condolences. Your Dad, Jimmy, and your Mom were wonderful neighbors for the many years we lived close by. They brought life and color to the neighborhood. We had so much fun over the years, Jimmy was a happy guy and had a little room in his heart for everyone. When my gang of friends was growing up, we hung out at Jimmy's Lunch next to the Keystone. Cousin Bud Stiles met Jimmy one day and Jim said "Buddy, I got Rocket Fever", and with that insisted Bud ride up the "3-Lane" in Jimmy's new black&white Oldsmobile. Bud & I recall that & many other stories often. There was more than fun in that guy though. He loved and encouraged us kids across the counter in sports and school. Perhaps it was having a big family, he had understanding and genuine feelings for everyone he knew and when he spoke with you, he expressed happiness or sadness for them. He also was "duty-bound". Funerals are never easy, and Jimmy seemed always to make time to visit grieving friends. So we are losing a really nice guy and a wonderful neighbor. RIP, Jimmy.
(sorry this is so lengthy, wish I could be there to speak with you all)

Please share this with Mrs. Ragard....The two of you were so special to me. I loved our visits at the veggie stand; there was never a dull moment with your stories you shared. Always laughter!! But this past summer was a very emotional one for both of us. I hold a very fond last memory...as I held his hand, he talked of his wife, I got in the car and gave him a big hug and said "love you guys!" Rest in peace, Mr. Ragard! You were the best!
