Dwight Funderburk Obituary

Dwight Evans Funderburk, 78, died Saturday, December 13, 2025 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born January 21, 1947 in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Grady Hall and Agnes Horne Funderburk. He was a 1965 graduate of Greenwood High School. Dwight began his career with Greenwood Mills and in 1978 established Triangle Construction, marking the beginning of his residential, industrial and commercial construction career in the Greenwood community and beyond. Dwight had quite an illustrious, diverse career as a builder and developer, and his intellect and creativity can be seen in properties he touched all over the Lakelands and Edisto Island. He was featured in the 1988 edition of South Carolina Builder Magazine, highlighting his efforts and belief in development in the Greenwood community on both the local level and the state level through the SC Homebuilders Association. In 2001, he was named as South Carolina Ambassador for Economic Development and in 2005, he expanded upon his talents and knack for development by purchasing the golf course at Edisto Island. Between 2005 and 2006, he completely renovated, redesigned and rebranded that club and course into what is now known as The Plantation Course at Edisto.

More recently, Dwight can be seen and recognized in any number of buildings and developments around Greenwood, including numerous businesses all up and down Hwy 72, and new residential neighborhoods such as Sagewood Grove and The Cottages at Emerald Farm. His intellectual and faithful spirit is also reflected in his philanthropic passions, such as the Greenwood Pathway House and North Side Baptist Church, as he contributed much time, effort and investment lending his brilliant builder mind to the structure and workability of many of their facilities. He was instrumental in the inception of the Greenwood Pathway House and served as Chairman and member of the Board of Directors for many years.

In addition to his parents, Dwight was preceded in death by his longtime companion Susan Sims and his brother, Steve Funderburk.

Dwight is survived by his children, Shay Twiggs (Sammy), Chip Funderburk (Katie) and Wes Funderburk (Ashley); his sister, Yvonne Nickles; his grandchildren, Mabrey Twiggs, Madison Twiggs, Evans and Mary Wynn Funderburk, Hattie, Lainey and Arlie Funderburk; nieces and nephews, Heather Nimmons (Ken), Nook Nickles (Amanda), Stephanie Funderburk and John Funderburk; Susan's children, Brittany Sims Dunlap (Terence) and Brooks Sims; Susan's grandchildren, Rudy Mac and Calhoun Dunlap; Susan's mother, Inez Cronic and Sammy Gunnells and special longtime friend and employee, James Williams (Julia).

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at North Side Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Lethco, Rev. Dock Hollingsworth and Rev. Mark Lowe officiating.

There will be a private entombment held at Oakbrook Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Terence Dunlap, Tony Conway, Ron Price, Ken Nimmons, Nook Nickles and Sergio Ochos.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bubba Harvin, Henry Dorn, Ben Lawrence, Jimmy Mathis, Tracey Terrell, Pat Webb, Pascal and Lisa Hurtebize, Hugh Moseley, Heather Henderson Smith, Jim Kempson, Dr. John and Jenni Shingler, Neil Hollingsworth, Dr. Tommy and Tara Stoddard, Gloria Wingard, Ronnie and Paula Henderson, Kelly McGinn, Sylvia Fuller and Debra Case.

The family is at the home of Chip and Katie Funderburk.

It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials made in Dwight's memory to the Greenwood Pathway House, 310 Panola Avenue, Greenwood SC 29646 (gwdpathway.org).

Chip,
My sincere condolences to you and your siblings. I will be praying for the families. Dwight certainly stood on business with a kind heart. He loved his children and grandchildren. He loved my brother in law, James Williams as his son. Keep his memories alive. Blessings to you all.
